Benzene and n -butene (1-, cis - and/or trans -) are reacted at a temperature of 20 to 70°C in the presence of a complex catalyst which is a homogeneous liquid of aluminum chloride, hydrogen chloride and an aromatic hydrocarbon, in amount of 0.3 to 5 wt% of the AlCl₃ to the benzene (prepared by stirring for ⅓ - 3 hours); the reaction mixture is separated into fractions containing mainly the desired product sec -butylbenzene with not more than 1% of by-product isobutylbenzene; heavy materials; and (which are recycled) benzene, and dibutyl- and tributylbenzenes. The catalyst can be separated, recovered and recycled. The reaction can be continuous or batchwise. The product sec -butylbenzene can be utilised for production of phenol.

A method for producing a compound having a double bond at the terminal which comprises dehydrating a compound represented by the formula (I), wherein R is a C 3 - C 20 hydrocarbon group which may have one or more double bonds, by contacting with zirconium oxide as a catalyst. According to the method described above, terminal olefins which are useful as a material for heat-resistant polymers, a comonomer for polyolefins, a raw material for detergents, etc. are provided at low costs and with safety.

Benzene (1 mole) and n -butene (0.2 to 1.2 mole) are mixed together with a liquid catalyst comprising 0.5 mole HCl and 2 moles of an aromatic hydrocarbon having 1 mole of AlCl₃ bonded thereto, and reacted at a temperature of 80-150°C for a time T of 0.01 - 0.7 hour, and at a catalyst concentration of not more than 0.9 wt%, usually 0.01 - 0.9 wt%,and the concentration C satisfying the formula: 40 > [C x T x 2 (K-20)/10 ]>20 The reaction can be batchwise or continuous. The sec -butylbenzene product is separated and recovered; by-product di- and tri- sec -butylbenzene may be transalkylated or recycled; unreacted benzene may be recycled; the spent catalyst can be recovered and recycled. By-product isobutylbenzene is kept to no more than 1 wt%. The sec -butylbenzene is useful in the production of phenol, e.g. by oxidation.
