Catalytic processes for the conversion of 2,5-dimethyl furan (DMF) to para-xylene are described. Para-xylene is a key product that is currently obtained commercially from petroleum sources. However, it has now been determined that the cycloaddition of ethylene to DMF provides an alternative route to para-xylene. Advantageously, the DMF starting material for the processes may be synthesized from carbohydrates (e.g., glucose or fructose), thereby providing a pathway that relies at least partly, if not completely, on renewable feedstocks.

The invention relates to a method and an installation for producing a concentrate of aromatic hydrocarbons from light aliphatic hydrocarbons and from mixtures thereof with oxygenates. According to the method, an initial raw material is fed into two in-series-connected reaction units, a first unit and a second unit, with zeolite catalysts based on a pentasil group; the reaction units are distinguished through the conditions for converting the hydrocarbons to aromatic hydrocarbons; a mixture obtained following the reaction units is separated into a liquid fraction and a gas fraction, and the gas fraction is fed to the inlet of the first and second reaction unit. The method is characterized in that the gas fraction obtained following the reaction units is separated into a hydrogen-containing gas and into a broad fraction of light hydrocarbons, containing olefins, and in that the hydrogen-containing gas is fed into an oxygenate synthesis unit, in that the resultant oxygenates are fed to the inlet of the first and second reaction unit, and in that the broad fraction of light hydrocarbons, containing olefins, is fed to the inlet of the first reaction unit. The use of the present invention allows for increasing the efficiency of producing concentrates of aromatic hydrocarbons and for increasing selectivity in regard to alkyl benzoles, and specifically xylenes.

The invention relates to a new catalytic composition for the alkylation of aromatic compounds with alcohols, or mixtures of alcohols and corresponding olefins, wherein said composition comprises a zeolite of the MTW type and is characterized in that it contains one or more alkaline metals in a total quantity which is less than or equal to 0.02% by weight. The use of said catalyst in the alkylation of aromatic compounds with alcohols, in particular benzene with isopropanol or ethanol, allows the formation, as by-product, of the aldehyde or ketone corresponding to the alcohol used, to be minimized: the formation of reaction by-products of said aldehydes or ketones having a boiling point very close to that of polyalkylation products, is therefore significantly reduced. This provides a considerable advantage in the subsequent transalkylation step for the recovery of said polyalkylates by transformation into the corresponding monoalkylates.
