A rubber composition suitable for tire treads having well-balanced excellent wet skid characteristic, ice skid characteristic and rolling characteristic, and an excellent processability, which comprises a rubber component containing at least 20 % by weight of a block copolymer consisting essentially of a block A and a block B, obtained by conducting polymerization of an aromatic vinyl compound and a conjugated diene compound in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an organolithium initiator and modifying with a coupling agent, and satisfying the following conditions (A) to (E);
(A) the block A having a content of an aromatic vinyl compound of at most 5 % by weight and a content of 1,2-bonds in the conjugated diene component of at least 10 % by weight, (B) the block B having a content of an aromatic vinyl compound of 25 to 50 % by weight and a content of 1,2-bonds in the conjugated diene component of at least 10 % by weight, (C) a content of the block A in the block copolymer being from 20 to 80 % by weight, (D) a content of the aromatic vinyl compound in the block copolymer being from 5 to 30 % by weight and a content of 1,2-bonds in the conjugated diene component of the block copolymer being from 20 to 60 % by weight, and (E) at least 40 % by weight of the polymer chains of the block copolymer being a branched polymer formed by modification with a dicarboxylic acid diester.

Described is a rubbery copolymer of ethylene, propylene and a nonconjugated polyene, wherein the ethylene/propylene molar ratio is 78/22 to 97/3 and the total content of propylene and nonconjugated polyene is 6 to 30 mole %, and is a vulcanizable rubber composition comprising said copolymer. The rubber composition of the present invention yields vulcanized products excellent in tensile strength, heat resistance, oil resistance, compression set resistance and flex behavior. The vulcanized products can be used as automobile parts and other articles such as socket covers, heat resistant hoses, electric wires, condenser caps, heat resistant belts, vibration-proof rubbers, hoses, weather strips, seal sponges, black side wall of tires, etc.

A vulcanizable elastomer composition comprises a mixture of (A) an elastomer containing (as cross-linking sites) an epoxy group - eg. glycidyl(meth)acrylate or copolymer of an epoxy monomer; (B) an organic compound (aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic) having at least two linkages, per molecule, of formula wherein X and Y are each an oxygen or sulfur atom, or one of X and Y is oxygen and the other is sulfur; (C) a quaternary ammonium salt and/or a quarternary phosphonium salt; (D) a compound having one linkage, per molecule, of the formula wherein Z is an oxygen or sulfur atom; and (E) calcium oxide or calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide. Preferred amounts are in parts by weight: 100 of (A), 0.1-10 of (B), 0.1-10 of (C), 0.1-10 of (D) and 0.1-20 of CaO. The components (B) to (E) are mixed with (A) and the composition molded to shape and can be vulcanised at at least 120" C to make seals, hoses, belts or rollers.

An elastomeric copolymer of an aromatic vinyl compound and butadiene prepared by a solution polymerization method, which has a glass transition temperature of not less than -50°C and contains polymer chains modified with a trifunctional or tetrafunctional coupling agent, and which contains not less than 3 % by weight to less than 23 % by weight, based on the whole polymer chains, of polymer chains having a molecular weight of at least 5 times a molecular weight corresponding to a peak appearing on the low molecular weight side of a high performance liquid chromatogram of the elastomeric copolymer. The elastomer- ic copolymer has an excellent processability and shows a low rolling resistance and a high wet grip characteristic when used as a rubber component in tires.
