An apparatus for driving a touchpad of a portable terminal including a second control unit controlling the touchpad in an active mode is provided. The apparatus includes a sensor unit for generating interrupt signals when pressure on the touchpad is sensed, a first control unit for outputting activating signals to activate the second control unit when the interrupt signals are input and a switching unit for transmitting the interrupt signals generated from the sensor unit to the first control unit when the second control unit is in an inactive mode. Accordingly, even though the multimedia processor embedded in the portable terminal is in an inactive mode, the multimedia processor is activated when a user presses the touchpad, thereby making it possible to process signals input by touching the touchpad, particularly, to keep the user interface. Furthermore, the multimedia processor embedded in the portable terminal can reduce the consumption of battery power required to maintain the user interface, as compared with multimedia processors maintaining operating in a conventional polling method.

An apparatus and method for controlling an operation of a portable terminal (100) having a multimedia function are provided. The apparatus includes a multimedia processor (170) for performing the multimedia function when a controller (130) is in a sleep mode wherein the controller (130) is converted to an active mode when a specified key signal is input into the controller (130) in the sleep mode and outputs an inactive signal to inactivate the multimedia processor (170). According to the present invention, the portable terminal (100) having the controller (130) controlling the mobile communication function and the multimedia processor (170) controlling the multimedia function, can independently perform the mobile communication function and the multimedia function according to the specified key input. Furthermore, according to the present invention, the controller (130) which controls the mobile communication function need not control the multimedia processor (170) which controls the multimedia function. Hence, it is possible to reduce power consumption and software errors occurring when the controller (130) controls the multimedia processor (170).

An apparatus and method for receiving digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) signals in a wireless terminal. A first antenna receives a satellite DMB signal and a first terrestrial DMB signal. A second antenna receives a second terrestrial DMB signal. A satellite DMB receiver receives the satellite DMB signal through the first antenna. A terrestrial DMB receiver receives the first and second terrestrial DMB signals through the first and second antennas. A switch switches the satellite DMB signal and the first terrestrial DMB signal received by the first antenna to the satellite DMB receiver or the terrestrial DMB receiver. The apparatus can receive DMB as well as communicate using the wireless terminal, thereby improving convenience for users.

A key control apparatus for a portable terminal including a first housing with first and second display units and a second housing with first and second key input units is provided. The key control apparatus allows the functions of the portable terminal to be conveniently implemented. The key control apparatus includes a first key input unit, a second key input unit and a control unit. The first key input unit includes a plurality of touch-sensitive touch keys for implementing given functions, one or more mechanical keys, and a plurality of sensors for sensing the touching of the touch keys and implementing a scroll function. The second key input unit includes a plurality of mechanical keys for implementing given functions or functions corresponding to the keys arranged on the first key input unit. The control unit controls the apparatus so that when a touch key in the first key input unit is touched, a function given to the touch key is implemented. Further, if touching is sensed through a sensor among the sensors of the first key input unit within a predetermined length of time after touching is sensed through another sensor, the control unit performs control in such a manner that a scroll function is performed in a corresponding direction, and, when the second housing is rotated, the control unit performs control so that predetermined keys among the mechanical keys of the second key input unit implement the functions corresponding to the touch keys.

Disclosed is a method for switching broadcasting channels in a digital broadcasting reception apparatus employing a time division multiplexing scheme. The method includes receiving and demodulating digital broadcasting data according to at least one broadcasting channel serviced in a frequency band used by the broadcasting station when the broadcasting channel of a predetermined broadcasting station is selected, outputting the digital broadcasting data of the selected broadcasting channel among the demodulated digital broadcasting data according to the broadcasting channels, storing digital broadcasting data according to the broadcasting channels except the selected broadcasting channel, and when there is a request for switching one of the broadcasting channels serviced by the broadcasting station, retrieving and outputting the digital broadcasting data of the requested broadcasting channel among the stored data. Since it is possible to quickly switch broadcasting channels in the apparatus during output of the digital broadcasting, the convenience for users is improved.
