The present invention pertains to sulfonated substantially random interpolymers made from monomer components comprising from 1 to 65 mole percent of (a) at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer, or (b) at least one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinylidene monomer, or (c) a combination of at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer and at least one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinylidene monomer, and from 35 to 99 mole percent of at least one aliphatic α-olefin having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; and optionally, from 0 to 20 mole percent of a diene containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms; wherein the sufonated interpolymer contains at least one mer (or moiety) of a group represented by the formula -SO3-M where M is hydrogen or a group 1, 7 or 12 metal in ionic form or combination thereof. The present invention also pertains to blends of these polymers with polyamides and polyolefins. These blends are useful as materials which can be formed into a wide variety of plastic articles which take advantage of the combination of toughness, heat resistance, and solvent resistance. The present invention also pertains to articles prepared from substantially random interpolymers which are surface sulfonated.

The invention includes a process of preparing a coupled polymer characterized by heating an admixture containing (1) at least one ethylene polymer or blend of ethylene polymers having a density of at least 0.89 g/mL and less than 0.935 g/mL and a comonomer content between 0.5 and 50 weight percent of an alpha olefin having greater than 2 and less than 20 carbon atoms per molecule and (2) a coupling amount of at least one poly(sulfonyl azide) to at least a decomposition temperature of the poly(sulfonyl azide) for a period sufficient for decomposition of at least 80 weight percent of the poly(sulfonyl azide) and sufficient to result in a coupled polymer. The amount of poly(sulfonyl azide) is preferably from 0.01 to 5 weight percent of polymers in the admixture. The invention also includes any composition which is the product of any of the processes of the invention and articles made from those compositions, particularly any film of any composition of the invention. Additionally the invention includes a use of any composition of the invention in a process of blowing, casting or calendaring a film. More particularly the invention includes articles of compositions of the invention which are trash bags, agricultural films, construction films, or geomembranes, grocery sacks, sealant layers, tie layers, produce bags, garment bags, shipping sacks, medical films, stretch films, shrink films, agricultural films, greenhouse films, construction films, or stretch hooders.

The subject invention provides a thermoset elastomer comprising a crosslinked pseudo-random or substantially random interpolymer of: (a) from 15 to 70 weight percent of at least one α-olefin, (b) from 30 to 70 weight percent of at least one vinylidene aromatic compound, and (c) from 0 to 15 weight percent of at least one diene. The subject invention further provides a thermoplastic vulcanizate comprising the thermoset elastomers of the invention as provided in a thermoplastic polyolefin matrix. The subject invention further provides processes for preparing the inventive thermoset elastomers and thermoplastic vulcanizates, as well as parts fabricated therefrom. The inventive materials have a superior balance of properties, as compared to EPM and EPDM based materials. The subject invention also pertains to foams and methods for their preparation.

The present invention is at least a two-component thermoplastic elastomeric composition comprising at least one block copolymer wherein the composition has essentially the same comparative elasticity, high temperature serviceability and hardness as the unmodified, undiluted (neat) block copolymer portion of the composition. The composition also shows enhanced thermal stability and processibility and is well suited for fabricating elastic moldings, films and fibers as well as for formulating with asphalts, adhesives and sealants. The novel thermoplastic elastomeric composition comprises (a) from about 50 to about 99 percent by weight of at least one block copolymer and (b) about 1 to about 50 percent by weight of at least one ethylene interpolymer having a density from about 0.855 g/cc to about 0.905 g/cc, wherein the ethylene interpolymer in the amount employed is a substantially inert extender of the block copolymer and the composition is further characterized as having:i. storage moduli throughout the range of -26° C. to 24° C. of less than about 3.5x109 dynes/cm2,ii. a ratio of storage modulus at -26° C. to storage modulus at 24° C. of less than about 4, andiii. storage moduli at -26° C. and 24° C. about 0.2 to about 3 times higher than the storage moduli at -26° C. and 24° C., respectively, of the neat block copolymer portion of the composition.

The invention includes a water-curable azidosilane grafted polymer selected from the group consisting of (i) homogeneous ethylene polymers which has a density less than or equal to 0.900 g/cm3, and (ii) interpolymers of at least one ethylene or α-olefin and at least one vinylidene aromatic compound. The water-curable silane-grafted polymer may comprise the reaction product of: at least one first polymer, the first polymer selected from the group consisting of an interpolymer, a substantially linear ethylene polymer, and a mixture thereof; the interpolymer comprising polymer units of at least one ethylene or α-olefin and at least one vinylidene aromatic compound; and at least one monofunctional azidosilane. The invention further includes a process for producing a water-curable silane-grafted polymer. A further embodiment of the process of the invention comprises shaping the water-curable silane-grafted polymer and contacting the shaped water curable silane-grafted polymer to form a moisture-cured polymer. The invention also includes the water curable silane-grafted polymers produced by either of the two processes along with any articles obtainable from that water curable silane-grafted polymer.

The polymer preferably comprises ethylene, and a vinyl aromatic monomer, preferably styrene. The amount of poly(sulfonyl azide) is preferably from 0.01 to 1 weight percent of the interpolymer and the reaction preferably takes place at a temperature greater than 150 °C, more preferably 185 °C. The process optionally and in one preferred embodiment additionally comprises steps (b) fabricating an article from the coupled polymer and (c) cross-linking the fabricated coupled polymer. The invention additionally includes any composition produced by a process of the invention and any article made from the composition, preferably articles formed from a melt of the composition, more preferably by blow molding, blowing a film, foaming, or profile extruding, most preferably to form a coating for wire or cable, a tube, a gasket, a seal, roofing, or fiber. The article is optionally calendared. Additionally, the invention includes the use of compositions of the invention as starting materials for forming processes in which the composition is melted and especially in blow molding, blowing a film, foaming, or profile extruding, most preferably to form a coating for wire or cable, a tube, a gasket, a seal, roofing, or fiber.
