The present invention relates to a peroxide curable rubber nanocomposite compound comprising a peroxide curative, a nanoclay and a high multiolefin halobutyl ionomer prepared by reacting a halogenated butyl polymer having a high mol percent of multiolefin with at least one nitrogen and/or phosphorus based nucleophile. The resulting high multiolefin halobutyl ionomer comprises from about 2 to 10 mol% multiolefin. The present invention is also directed to a shaped article comprising the rubber compound.

The present invention relates to a process for producing peroxide curable high multiolefin halobutyl ionomers prepared by reacting a halogenated butyl polymer having a high mol percent of multiolefin with at least one nitrogen and/or phosphorus based nucleophile. The present invention pertains to sulfonated substantially random interpolymers made from monomer components comprising from 1 to 65 mole percent of (a) at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer, or (b) at least one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinylidene monomer, or (c) a combination of at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer and at least one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinylidene monomer, and from 35 to 99 mole percent of at least one aliphatic α-olefin having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; and optionally, from 0 to 20 mole percent of a diene containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms; wherein the sufonated interpolymer contains at least one mer (or moiety) of a group represented by the formula -SO3-M where M is hydrogen or a group 1, 7 or 12 metal in ionic form or combination thereof. The present invention also pertains to blends of these polymers with polyamides and polyolefins. These blends are useful as materials which can be formed into a wide variety of plastic articles which take advantage of the combination of toughness, heat resistance, and solvent resistance. The present invention also pertains to articles prepared from substantially random interpolymers which are surface sulfonated.

A composition, extrudable or calenderable into a membrane, comprising 100 parts by weight of a neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer, 40 to 250 parts of a non-polar process oil, 5 to 50 parts of a preferential plasticizer selected from the group consisting of a basic salt of a carboxylic acid and an organic amide and at least 65 parts of carbon black. The membrane, made in accordance with the composition of this invention, has particular application as a roof covering.

Blends of nylon and a elastomer containing neutralized sulfonated ethylene propylene diene rubbers (EPDM) and a preferential plasticizer and a process for the preparation thereof. The blend preferably comprises from 5 to 60 wt. % of the elastomer and forms compositions having high impact resistance. Processes for preparing the blends are described.
