A process for the preparation of five-membered nitrogen-containing saturated heterocyclic compounds, such as pyrrolidone having high yield and selectivity results from carrying out a catalytic hydrogenation/amination of a five-membered heterocyclic anhydride or the corresponding acid in the presence of a complex catalyst containing ruthenium. Preferred catalysts have the formula:-
In a representative embodiment maleic anhydride is converted to pyrrolidone by hydrogenation/amination in the presence of a ruthenium containing catalyst at a pressure of approximately 70 kg/cm 2 at a temperature of approximately 250°C.

A process of upgrading synthesis gas to hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons, particularly olefins and carboxylic acids, comprises contacting synthesis gas with catalysts comprising the mixed oxides of ruthenium, copper, an alkali or alkaline earth metal, and optionally a metal selected from Ce, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Th, Zn or mixtures thereof. The synthesis gas upgrading product may be contacted with a hydrogenation catalyst to provide alkanes, alcohols and esters, useful for fuels. Catalysts comprising the mixed oxides of ruthenium, copper, at least one alkali metal and at least one of rhodium, iridium, palladium, and platinum are further disclosed which are useful in the upgrading of synthesis gas, particularly for obtaining alkanes and alcohols.

Five, six and seven-member nitrogen-containing saturated heterocyclic compounds are prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation/cyclization of beta, gamma and delta- cyanoesters, in the presence of catalysts containing ruthenium and/or iron which give the desired product in high yield and with high selectivity. The conversion of methyl-3-cyano-propionate to pyrrolidone and methyl-5-cyanopropionate to caprolactam are particularly described.
