A method for hierarchical disparity estimation on an image pair, wherein image pyramids are created (10) by successively downscaling each image of the image pair, and an apparatus (20) configured to perform the method are described. An initial disparity estimator (22) applies (11) a full search on a highest level of the image pyramids to determine initial disparity estimates, the highest level having the lowest resolution. A disparity propagator (23) passes (12) the initial disparity estimates to a next lower level of the image pyramids. An allocator (24) then partitions (13) the pixels of each remaining hierarchy level of the image pyramids into two or more groups of pixels, where each pixel in a group of pixels can be processed independently from remaining pixels of that group of pixels. A disparity estimator (25) estimates (14) disparity values for the pixels of a first group of pixels utilizing disparity estimates from a next higher level of the image pyramids. The disparity estimator (25) further estimates (15) disparity values for the pixels of remaining groups of pixels utilizing disparity estimates from a previously processed group of pixels in that hierarchy level.

Consumer electronic devices, such as e.g. high-definition movie players for removable storage media such as optical discs, may provide possibilities for advanced interactivity for the user, implemented as software applications. A question arising generally with such software applications is what the life cycle of such an application is, and who may control it. The invention provides a method for executing software applications within a playback device for audio-video data, wherein data from a first removable storage medium are read for a software application to be executed within said playback device, and the data comprise an indication defining a termination condition for the application. Based on said termination code and depending on how the medium holding the application is ejected, the application is terminated or may survive.

The use of disk-assisted, dynamic databases is to be optimized. To this end, provision is made for new data intended to update an old stock of data to have a second index, relating to the new data, generated for them (S3), and for said second index to be stored (S4) on the disk storage medium as a supplement to the first index relating to the old stock of data (S1). This allows the number of write access operations to the disk storage medium to be reduced. This is particularly advantageous for optical media, whose useful life can be increased as a result.

The handling of large amounts of data on storing media shall be simplified. Therefore, a method for maintaining a storage media by generating, editing or reading log data related to the content and usage of a data item stored or to be stored on a storage medium is provided. Data items are deleted or recommendations for deletion are provided on the basis of the log data from the storage medium. Thus, the user is relieved from the unpleasant and time-consuming task of deleting data items from recording media.
