The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for processing video pictures for dynamic false contour effect compensation. It comprises the steps of: - dividing each of the video pictures into at least a first type of area and a second type of area according to the video gradient of the picture, a specific video gradient range being associated to each type of area, - allocating a first set of sub-field code words to the first type of area and a second set of sub-field code words to the second type of area, the second set being a subset of the first set, - encoding the pixels of the first type of area with the first set of sub-field code words and encoding the pixels of the second type of area with the second set of sub-field code words, wherein, for at least one horizontal line of pixels comprising pixels of first type area and pixels of second type area, the area of second type is extended until the next pixel in the first type area is a pixel encoded by a sub-field code word belonging to both first and second set of sub-field code words.

For this purpose there is disclosed an apparatus for driving a display device (16) including input means (11) for receiving a digital value as video level for each pixel or cell of a line of the display device (16), reference signalling means (19) for providing at least one reference driving signal and driving means (15) for generating a driving signal on the basis of the digital value and the at least one reference driving signal. The invention relates to a method and a device for encoding the luminance value of a pixel of a picture into a subfield code word in a display device. It can be applied to every display device using a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) technology and subfields for displaying video picture. It can be used to compensate for any luminance problem that can be estimated. The general idea of the recursive coding is to encode one sub-field after the other in order to be able to compensate for problems occurring on one sub-field with the other sub-fields. More particularly, the bits of a subfield code word are computed recursively one after the other such that the defects (e.g. line load and/or linearity) in the light emission or luminance generated by a bit of the subfield code word can be compensated by the following bits of the subfield code word.

For stereoscopic displaying the new plasma display panels are providing promising results. When using shutter glasses that are controlled by the PDP, it is possible to display left and right image in short succession for stereoscopic displaying. However, there is the phosphor lag effect that is really disturbing and can totally impede the stereovision. The frame period of a stereoscopic picture is divided to at least one left period and at least one right period for the left picture (L) and the right picture (R) respectively. According to the invention both pictures are analyzed for similarities and the common part for a pair of corresponding pixels is determined. Sub-field code words for the left/right picture are determined having a part for the specific left/right sub-fields (SLSF, SRSF) and a part for the common sub-fields (CSF). The common sub-fields (CSF) are positioned at the end of each left/right field for the left/right picture so that the phosphor lag effect is no longer visible.

A picture quality when reducing the brightness or the contrast of the picture on a plasma panel (1) shall be improved. For this purpose there is provided a driving apparatus including brightness/contrast control means (5) for receiving video input data for modifying the video levels of the video input data in accordance with external adjustment data and for outputting modified video data. First power measurement means (10) measure a power level of the modified video data and supply a first power level. Second power measurement means (11) measure a power level of the video input data and supply a second power level. Generator means (12) generate a third power level comprised between the first power level and the second power level or equal to the larger one to data processing means (6, 7, 8, 9). The data processing means (6, 7, 8, 9) calculate the maximum number of sustain pulses per frame applicable to the modified video data on the basis of the third power level and control the display of the modified video data on the plasma display panel (1).Thus, the number of gray levels can be increased and the picture quality improves significantly.

The invention relates to a method and a device for encoding the video level of a pixel of a picture into a subfield code word in a display device. The bits of the subfield code word are computed recursively one after the other from the bit having the most significant weight to the bit having the least significant weight. According to the invention, for determining the state of a bit of the subfield code word, a first threshold and a second threshold is associated with said bit, said second threshold being greater than said first threshold, and the video level to be encoded by this bit and its following bits in the subfield code word are compared to the first and second thresholds. If the video level is lower than the first threshold, a state "OFF" is allocated to the bit. If the video level is greater than the second threshold, a state "ON" is allocated to the bit and if the video level is lying between the first and second thresholds, a state "ON" is allocated to the bit according to a predetermined criteria.
