A process for producing a photochromic layered product, characterized by preparing a base having a curved surface, applying a photopolymerizable/curable composition containing a photochromic compound and a phosphorus compound photopolymerization initiator to the curved surface of the base, and curing the photopolymerizable/curable composition by irradiation with actinic energy rays having a distribution in which the relative intensity of components ranging in wavelength from 200 nm to 300 nm, excluding 300 nm, accounts for 0 to 5%, the relative intensity of components ranging in wavelength from 300 nm to 400 nm, excluding 400 nm, accounts for 25 to 75%, and the relative intensity of components ranging in wavelength from 400 nm to 500 nm accounts for 25 to 75%, while keeping the base at 100°C or lower. Thus, a homogeneous coating film having an even small thickness and containing a photochromic compound in a high concentration can be formed.

A coating agent composition obtained by mixing fine inorganic oxide particles, a polymerizable alkoxysilane compound, a polymerizing catalyst, an acid aqueous solution and an organic solvent, and satisfying the following conditions (1) to (3): (1) the polymerizing catalyst is at least partly an acetylacetonato complex; (2) a ²-dicarbonyl compound (excluding acetylacetonato complex) having two carbonyl groups in the molecule via a carbon atom, is further contained as a catalyst stabilizer; and (3) the fine inorganic oxide particles and the alkoxysilane compound are contained in a total amount of 23 to 40% by mass. The coating agent composition is capable of forming a cured film having excellent properties such as abrasion resistance on the surfaces of plastic ophthalmic lens through the curing conducted at a low temperature for a short period of time, and does not affect the color tone of the lens material even when it is directly applied to the surfaces of the plastic lens material that contains a coloring matter, such as sunglass lenses.

A photochromic optical article comprising an optical substrate having a photochromic layer which is formed on at least one surface thereof and contains a photochromic compound is dispersed in a resin, and a thin metal oxide layer formed on the photochromic layer, wherein an indenonaphthopyran compound is used as the photochromic compound, the photochromic layer having a thickness of 30 to 50µm, and the thin metal oxide layer has a thickness of 0.01 to 10µm. The photochromic optical article has excellent photochromic properties, effectively suppresses a decrease in the photochromic properties caused by deterioration due to oxidation and features very excellent photochromic light resistance.

A curable composition which comprises (1) 0.1 to 20 pts.wt. of a silicon compound which has a silanol group or a functional group generating a silanol group upon hydrolysis and has no radical-polymerizable groups, such as Ϝ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, (2) 100 pts.wt. of one or more radical-polymerizable monomers, and (3) 0.01 to 20 pts.wt. of a photochromic compound, wherein the radical-polymerizable monomers comprise a radical-polymerizable monomer having an epoxy group in the molecule, such as glycidyl methacrylate. This curable composition can form a photochromic layer having such excellent photochromism that it assumes a color having a high density and has a high fading rate. The photochromic layer does not release the photochromic compound and comes to have high substrate adhesion through a simple pretreatment. The composition is highly suitable for hard coating.

This method makes it possible to form a homogeneous and thin film containing a photochromic compound at a high concentration and having a uniform thickness on the substrate having a curved surface, such as a spectacle lens that is generally available, and to impart photochromic properties while maintaining excellent mechanical and optical properties of the substrate.

An example of the compound is represented by the following formula (I). This photochromic compound has a medium tone when in a colored state. It has high sensitivity in coloration and a high discoloration rate and has satisfactory photochromic durability.

A polymerization-curable composition obtained by blending a monomer component comprising a specific difunctional monomer having a structure constituted of two phenylene groups connected by a specific group, for example, 2,2-bis(4-methacryloyloxy- polyethoxyphenyl)propane, an at least trifunctional poly- merizable monomer such as trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, and other monomer in specified proportions respectively with a photochromic compound and a specific light stabilizer such as bis(1,2,2,6,6- pentamethyl-4-piperidyl) sebacate. This composition can give cured articles which exhibit excellent photochromic characteristics including fast fading and satisfactory piercing resistance to be used for rimless glasses, and is excellent in long-term storage stability.
