The invention concerns a method for keeping the coating rod and the rod cradle in a bar coater clean and for prevention of leakage of the lubrication and/or cooling water used. The invention is meant for a bar coater in which the coating rod (41) is, substantially over its entire length, supported revolvingly in a rod cradle (42) attached to the frame constructions (50) of the coater. The rod cradle is provided with at least one groove (43,44) substantially parallel to the coating rod (41) and open towards said coating rod, in which groove(s) water is circulated to lubricate, to cleanse and/or to cool the coating rod (41) and the rod cradle (42). The coating rod (41) is loaded towards the base (B) to be coated by loading the rod cradle (42). The rod cradle (42) and the sealing lips (45,47) of the rod cradle are loaded so that the loading seals the glide faces (46, 48) between the coating rod (41) and the rod cradle (42) substantially over the entire length of the rod cradle and prevents leakage or at least substantially reduces leakage from the water grooves (43,44). The invention also concerns an equipment intended for carrying out the method.

The present invention relates to a method for coating a paper or paperboard web by at least two coat layers. The goal is to achieve a two-layer coating method capable of providing a smooth coat with high opacifying power. The invention is based on initially applying onto the web to be coated a first coat layer, whose surface is smoothed by means of a smoothing element, after which onto the partially or entirely dried, moist first coat layer of the web is applied a second coat layer using a transfer roll coater.

The invention concerns a device for metering of a coating agent onto a moving base, such as a paper or board web (W). The device (10) comprises a coating nip (N₁) formed by soft-faced applicator rolls (11,21), through which nip the web (W) is passed, the first applicator roll (11) from among said applicator rolls being journalled as fixed on the frame (1) of the device, and the second applicator roll (21) being linked to the frame (1) of the device pivotally by the intermediate of a loading arm (24) or equivalent. At least one of said applicator rolls (11,21) is in nip contact with a hard transfer roll (41,61), which is further in nip contact with a soft-faced metering roll (31,51). In a metering nip (N₂,N₄) between the metering roll and the transfer roll, a pond (P₁,P₂) has been formed out of the coating agent, out of which pond, as the rolls revolve, the coating agent is fitted to be transferred through the metering nip (N₂,N₄) onto the face of the transfer roll (41, 61) and from there further, through the transfer nip (N₃,N₅) formed by the transfer roll (41,61) and the applicator roll (11,21), onto the face of the applicator roll (11,21). From the applicator roll the coating agent is fitted to be transferred onto the web (W) in the coating nip (N₁). In the solution in accordance with the invention, the metering roll (31) and the transfer roll (41) placed next to the fixed applicator roll (11) and/or the metering roll (51) and the transfer roll (61) placed next to the mobile applicator roll (21) are linked pivotally to the same machine member on the frame (1) of the device.
