The invention mainly relates to a method for determining the mass flow rate (D 1 ) of air entering the intake manifold (3) of an internal combustion engine (2) provided with an exhaust-gas recirculation system (10), wherein said intake manifold (3) has a water-cooled air exchanger (6) built therein, the method being characterized in that it includes at least the steps of: determining the mass flow rate (D 2 ) of the recirculated gases (D 2 ) entering the intake manifold (3); determining the flow rate (D 3 ) of gas entering the intake manifold (3) using the Saint-Venant formula; and determining the mass flow rate (D 1 ) of air entering the intake manifold (3) by means of the difference between the mass flow rate (D 3 ) of gas entering the intake manifold (3) and the mass flow rate (D 2 ) of the recycled gas entering the intake manifold (3).
