The lubricating system is improved by a greater number of intake camshaft bearings (49,52,59) than exhaust camshaft bearings (62,68), the intake camshaft (53) being provided with a greater number of cam lobes (78) than the exhaust camshaft (63) for operating a greater number of intake valves (27,28,29) than exhaust valves (36,37) wherein the camshaft bearings (49,52,59;62,68) are disposed between the cam lobes (78,96) operating the intake and exhaust valves (27,28,29;36,37) of one cylinder of the engine (21).

A lubrication arrangement for an engine and more particularly to an arrangement for lubricating the valve train of an engine. The valve train includes a cylinder head (24) that journals an intake (53) and an exhaust (63) camshaft through bearings formed in the cylinder head and the cam cover (47). Hydraulic lash adjusters (81-98) are associated with each of the camshafts and there are more intake adjusters than exhaust adjusters. An arrangement is provided for delivering lubricant to the lash adjusters and the camshaft journals which includes a passageway formed in the cam cover. Lubricant is delivered to the cylinder head in proximity to the intake adjusters so that the intake adjusters and the exhaust adjusters will receive lubricant at substantially the same pressure.

A cylinder head (24) construction for an internal combustion engine that permits a large number of valves to be employed and good bearing surface without interfering with the insertion or removal of the multiple valve springs. This is accomplished by providing a relief in one of the camshaft journals (51) that is juxtaposed to one of the valves so that the valve spring (34) can be easily inserted and removed. In addition, the seating area (88) for the valve springs in the cylinder head is machined to a diameter smaller than the diameter of the valve springs and a spring seating member (89) is interposed between this cylinder head surface (88) and the adjacent end of the valve spring (34) and has a diameter at least equal to that of the valve spring (34).
