An enclosed water heater boiler (1) for burning solid fuel is disclosed. The burner assembly (10) has two burners namely a granular fuel burner (11) and a fuel fired burner (12). The granular fuel burner (11) has a brazier fed with the granular fuel and the fluid fired burner (12) being mounted remote from the brazier such that the flame generated by the fluid fired burner (12) is directed beside and substantially away from the brazier. A flame transfer device (15) is provided to direct some of the flame generated by the fluid fired burner (12) as a concentrated jet against portion of the granulated fuel (25) to ignite the granular fuel allowing for extremely efficient ignition and a substantial reduction in CO generation. This burner assembly provides additional heat from boilers as required over short periods of time.

A coil winding apparatus (1) for forming an elongate strip (2) into an elongate helically wound coil (7) is disclosed. The present invention provides a machine which can efficiently manufacture such coils (7) to thereby increase through-put whilst at the same time eliminating the need for operator interference in the manufacturing process. The present invention also reduces the tendency for coils (7) to slightly unwind due to the elasticity of the strip (2) of material when being removed from the apparatus (1).

There is provided a condensing unit (1) for a water heating boiler forming part of a water heating system. The condensing unit (1) has a main enclosure (12) which houses a water jacket (35) and an exhaust gas flue passageway (20). There is provided an inlet manifold (25) for exhaust gases produced by the boiler which delivers the exhaust gases to gas conduits formed by tubes (32) incorporating spirally wound baffles (33). The exhaust gases are delivered from the inlet manifold (25) to a transfer manifold (27), then through further gas conduits (30), from the transfer manifold (27) to an outlet manifold (26). Return water from the heating system is delivered through a water jacket inlet (15) to a water jacket outlet (16) which is connected to the return inlet of the boiler, thus heating the water. The advantage of this stand alone unit is that it can be readily easily fitted to existing boilers, either against the side of the boiler or on top of it.

The heater (1) has usually more than one electrical heating element and preferably three which increase the total heating capacity by forty percent or so. The heater (1) comes into operation when the draw off from the boiler (3) exceeds a flow rate of 8 litres per minute or so and the temperature of the water falls below an acceptable output temperature. It is particularly useful for Combi boilers which are demand draw off combination central heating and domestic hot water supply boilers with relatively little hot water storage capacity.

Adjacent transverse baffle plates (30, 31, 32, 33) are longitudinally spaced-apart to define interconnected transverse passageways. Deflectors (50, 51, 52, 54) are welded to each baffle plate (30, 31, 32, 33) and direct flame and hot gases against the water-carrying surface of the boiler. The baffle plate assemblies are removable through the top of the boiler for cleaning.
