The invention features an injection device for needles injection. To inject a drug into the body, the oriface (13) of the syringe assembly is pressed against the skin. Thumb pressure is then used to press an injection button (7). This action locks the button in position at detents (16), actuator (4) seats against the chamered end of opening (11). When gas reservoir (6) hits the pointed end of the actuator (4), a seal is ruptured in reservoir (6) thereby releasing the compressed gas contained therein. The gas escapes through the actuator (4) and into an opening (11) where it impinges upon the bottom of floating plunger (10). The plunger (10) pushes against mated pistons (9a, b) thereby expelling the drug through the oriface (13) and into the skin. The entire injection process is completed in less than 2 seconds.

Microneedles can be formed of biodegradable or non-biodegradable polymeric materials or metals. In a preferred embodiment, a microneedle device includes a plugging element comprising a platform including a plurality of microneedle plugs for preventing skin or other tissue barriers from entering the hollow microneedles. In another preferred embodiment, a microneedle device includes a plurality of bioerodible elements for temporarily plugging the hollow microneedles, thereby preventing skin or other tissue barriers from entering the hollow microneedles.
