A shift pattern control for a multiple speed ratio transmission wherein an inference-based control overrides the normal shift pattern to automatically achieve manual pulldown operation under conditions for which such operation would be advised and expected. The inference-based control is achieved with a fuzzy logic technique by which vehicle parameters influencing the desirability of manual pulldown operation are measured or estimated, and used to establish an aggregate measure of the overall need for engine braking and downshifting. In the preferred embodiment, the fuzzy logic parameters include vehicle speed, grade load, engine throttle position, time of braking and time of deceleration. The parameters are applied to membership functions to indicate the truthfulness of the specified conditions, and logical combinations of the truth indications are formed, weighted to reflect their criticality, and combined to form an aggregate measure of the overall need for pulldown operation.

A countershaft type power transmission has a plurality of selectively engageable friction clutches for establishing a plurality of forward drive ratios and a reverse drive ratio between meshing gear members on an input shaft (12), a countershaft and an output shaft (50). One of the power paths established by the meshing gears includes a gear member (48) rotationally fast on the output shaft. A parking pawl member (74) is selectively engageable with this gear member to prevent output shaft rotation when parking is desired. The pawl has teeth (80A-D) formed thereon having a profile which permit continuous simultaneous engagement between two teeth on the pawl and two teeth (78) on the gear member regardless of the rotational bias imposed on the output shaft during parking.

A power transmission (16) has an input shaft (14), an output shaft (18) and a countershaft (20) disposed on parallel non-coaxial axes. A transfer gear train (30,32,36) including a gear member supported on each axis is connectible to the input shaft through a forward friction clutch (24) for drivingly connecting the input shaft and the countershaft through a one-way drive (34) connection to the output shaft. The transfer gear train provides the first and lowest forward drive ratio between the input and output shafts through the one-way drive connection. A plurality of friction clutches on the input and countershafts and associated reaction gears on the shafts are selectively operable to provide a plurality of higher forward ratios during which the one-way device permits the output shaft to overrun the transfer gear mounted thereon.

An engine (10) equipped with a low resolution crankshaft rotation encoder (12) is diagnosed by measuring the average speeds for each encoder period, deriving estimated instantaneous speeds (V-(L) and V(H)) for top dead centre positions of each cylinder and for the points midway between top dead centres. Speed changes calculated from the estimated speeds for the compression and combustion phases of each cylinder provide measures of the compression and power output of each cylinder. An engine speed signature trace (34) derived from the estimated speeds is displayed to reveal speed changes and a composite display of several consecutive signatures provides further information.

The mass and stiffness of the crankarms (31-38) may be varied by changing the lateral width of the crankarms (31-38) or by other means. A shift pattern control in which upshifting and downshifting is modified in response to a detected condition of above normal road load. The above normal loading may be due to a number of conditions such as trailering, steep grades, unusual aerodynamic loading, or any combination thereof. A load equation balancing the output torque of the engine at the output of the transmission against the nominal road load (including acceleration torque, aerodynamic torque and rolling resistance torque) provides a continuous indication of the excess or above normal road load. The excess load, referred to herein as the grade load GL, is used to develop a hysteresis term for modifying the base shift pattern so as to provide earlier downshifting and later upshifting. When the grade load exceeds a reference corresponding to a relatively high load condition, upshifting is further delayed in relation to the ability of the powertrain to overcome the detected road load in the upshifted speed ratio.
