摘要: An acetabular cup prosthesis has a cup body with correspondingly shaped inner concave and outer convex surfaces. The cup body has an apex and a base that defines a plane. The cup body outer convex surface has a toroidally shaped portion between the base and the transition. In one embodiment, the outer convex surface is toroidally shaped between the rim and a distance about one third of the distance of the rim to the apex. In another embodiment, a plurality of cup bodies are provided in a range of sizes between about 40mm and 80mm. Each cup body has a companion rotary reamer that is correspondingly shaped. The companion cup body is oversized between about 1mm and 3mm so that a generally constant change in volume is provided for all cup sizes between 40mm and 80mm.

摘要: A surgical instrument apparatus (10) includes an elongated alignment rod (11) that can enable a surgeon to define alignment with a patient's long bone. An instrument block body (16) can slide upon the alignment rod (11) between its end portions (12, 13). A locking member forms a connection with the rod at a selected position along the rod. The locking member includes a cam locking arrangement (25) that rotates about a pivot (24) on the instrument body. The cam has a handle portion or arm (28) that enables a user to rotate the cam and its locking tab about its pivot. Part of the locking cam includes a locking tab having a slot (37) that extends circumferentially about ninety degrees around the pivot of the cam. The slot is positioned radially in between the pivot and the periphery of the locking member at a locking member bearing surface. The open end portion (40) of the slot communicates with the locking member periphery.

摘要: The invention provides composites of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene reinforced with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene anisotropic reinforcement of high strength and modulus. The composites have superior mechanical properties related to non-filled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, including higher strength, impact strength, increased creep resistance, and improved modulus. The composites may be sterilized for biomedical use, using gamma radiation and other techniques. Further, the composites are resistant to the effet of body fluids and have lower creep rates so that they will provide implant life. The composites may be cross-linked by exposure to an acetylene environment. Also, the composites find use in other high strength, high compact applications such as sports equipment.

摘要: Method for percutaneous fixation of a pair of vertebrae comprising posterolaterally entering the back percutaneously with a plurality of pedicle screws (1), screwing each screw into the medullary canal (2) of the pedicles (3) of adjacent thoracic and/or lumbar vertebrae or the pedicles of the L5 and S1 vertebrae, to a position where the proximal end (1b) thereof lies adjacent the fascia of the patient; inserting pedicle screw linkages (7) under the skin of the back and detachably securing the linkage means to the proximal ends of the screws on the same side of the spinous processes of vertebrae. A kit is provided for percutaneous fixation of vertebrae, comprising a plurality of pedicle screws (1) of different sizes, yet of a size to enable the distal end (1a) of each screw to be screwed into the medullary canal of a pedicle of a vertebra with the proximal end (1b) thereof lying adjacent the fascia of a patient.

摘要: A composite surgical spinal fixation system including a bone bolt (11) having end portions (12) that are adapted to be surgically implanted into a patient's spine at first and second spaced apart positions and a central portion of the bone bolt defining a load transfer surface, the bone bolt having a second upper threaded section (14) for threadably receiving a nut (16) at a shaped, countersunk interface (42). As an alternate embodiment, a bone screw provides an upper enlarged head (46) with a lower coarsely threaded shank (44). A composite plate (17) having upper and lower surfaces and outer opposed edges is provided with an elongated slot (20) for accommodating a selected bone bolt or bone screw. The plate edges carry fine adjustments (27,28) extending between the upper and lower surfaces of the plate and a load transfer washer (35) interfaces the plate and the selected bone bolt or bone bolt (or screw) to the plate. The composite plate adopts a curved configuration via asymmetric ply lamination or by melt-forming. The curvature of the plate is dictated by the natural lordotic curvature of the patient's spine. The plate is comprised of either a plurality of laminal arranged in a specific ply sequence or a plurality of fibers or tows arranged through winding and/or placement. Electrochemical compatibility with the composite plate is ensured by careful selection of the materials comprising the attachment means and the washer mechanism.

摘要: A method and apparatus for performing an arthroscopic spinal laminectomy or similar surgical procedure includes a plurality of cannulas which are individually inserted, in a predetermined sequence, into predetermined areas of a patient's spinal column. The first inserted cannula (78) has a tissue manipulating surface (20) thereon which is used to create a working space adjacent a predetermined area of the patient's spinal column. A viewing device is inserted through this cannula and the fluid used in association therewith is used to maintain the working space. The second and third cannulas (88) are larger in size and are working cannulas in that they provide passageways for instruments used in the surgical procedure. The second and third cannulas are utilised by the surgeon to sequentially remove a portion of the ligaments flavum necessary to expose the desired area of the patient's spinal bone and, if necessary, to remove any portion of bone necessary to expose the nerve and disc area. The nerves are then moved and the sequestered portion of the disc is removed, all utilising the cannulas as passageways to perform the surgical procedure. In addition to a cannula which has a tissue manipulating surface thereon, the invention includes a rongeur having a cross section shaped to pass through a cannula and with a suction connection therefor so that whatever body tissue and/or bone fragments are cut by the rongeur may be removed by suction through the passageways created by the cannula.
