    摘要: A steering column locking assembly and method of making same includes swaging a steering column tube (1) and a steering column lock collar (2) in such a manner that relative movement between the two parts is resisted below a predetermined level of torque whilst relative rotation occurs at values of torque above the predetermined value. A layer (3) of plastics material may be provided between the two parts. Once the predetermined torque is overcome, then rotation between the two parts occurs, but ceases once the torque level drops below the predetermined level.

    摘要: A clamping mechanism for an adjustable steering column incorporates a pre-set but variable preload. An operating handle (4) is fitted on a shaft (5) to rotate between clamped and unclamped conditions. Part of the shaft is provided with opposed flats (6) about which a shaft lock washer (7) is non-rotatably fitted. The lock washer operates with a stop member (11) to prevent rotation of the assembly, and a nut (13) is tightened on one end (8) of the shaft to the required preload.

    摘要: A clamp yoke (10) formed from a flat piece of metal. The flat piece (5) being approximately T-shaped which is bent into the clamp yoke. The top portion of the T forming the yoke ears (24) and the vertical portion forming two approximately parallel shaft portions (12, 14). The yoke ears each having a bearing bore (26) therein and the shaft portions each having a shaft receiving bore (20) therein. The clamp yoke can be provided with a bolt (30) having a reduced diameter middle which allows a shaft to be inserted into the shaft receiving bores without removing the bolt. The bolt is then tightened, drawing the larger diameter portion into the center of the clamp yoke where the bolt engages a transversely relieved portion on the shaft to axially retain the shaft.

    摘要: A collapsible steering column assembly with means to absorb energy transmitted by the steering column upon collapse, including a deformable U-shaped wire clip (7) engaged around a pair of pins (10). A skid member (9) adjoins the clip (7) and is coupled to the steering column so that, upon collapse of the steering column, the skid member is urged in a direction to deform the wire clip by drawing it over the pins (10). The clip and skid member are accommodated in a fixed mounting bracket (8) for the steering column. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 5, 6), the pins (10A) are secured to a mouveable plate (12) so that the plate moves upon vehicle impact to straighten the two wires (7A) around the pins, one end (15) of each wire being secured in a fixed plate (14).

The resilient seal member (46) has at least one resilient lip (60) forming an interference fit with a contact surface (62) of the contact member.
