In a method and device for mechanically processing a cluster (38; 161; 210) of organs of a slaughtered animal (80), the cluster, comprising heart, lungs and liver, is taken out of and separated from the body of the slaughtered animal. A strong organ is fixed at a point of fixing for bringing said cluster (38; 161; 210) in a spatial orientation which is determined by the way of fixing. Said cluster is conveyed along a predetermined path. Tissue connections in said cluster are broken on the basis of the spatial orientation of said cluster in a maintained condition of fixing by exerting a force in a direction away from the point of fixing on one or more organs of said cluster. The force engages the one or more organs at a distance from the point of fixing for moving the heart, lungs and liver away from the point of fixing without separating the heart, lungs and liver completely from the remaining organs. Said cluster is subsequently fed automatically to a device (238) for separating heart, lungs and liver from the cluster.

A machine for separating serosa from mucosa is disclosed. The machine comprises two peeling rollers (15,16), or one peeling roller or belt (26) and a stationary member (25). The stationary member can comprise a blade. The separation between the two peeling rollers, or the one peeling roller or belt and stationary member is about equal to or less than the thickness of a harvested intestine ribbon. The separation has a proximal and a distal end. The machine also comprises first means for rotating the one or more peeling rollers or the peeling belt at a first speed. A pull roller (18) is adjacent to the distal end of the separation. The machine further comprises second means for rotating the pull roller at a second speed. The second speed is less than the first speed of the first means for rotating. The source of the nonseparated serosa-mucosa layer can be a harvested intestine ribbon of a mammal. Separated serosa is useful in the manufacture of catgut sutures.
