A system for monitoring a cement that undergoes polymerization during curing such as most bone and dental cements by passing an electrical signal through the cement to determine the swelling phase, the initiation of polymerization of the cement and the effective working phase. The system further can control the swelling phase to reduce the time from the mixing of the cement to the initiation of the polymerization by using a ultrasonic signal or by heating the cement and can control the effective working phase after the polymerization has been initiated in order to prolong the working phase by cooling the cement.

The apparatus includes a radiation source (6,8) from which radiation is directed towards cement in the container (2) and a sensor (10) for detecting radiation from the radiation source (6,8) which has passed through cement in the container (2) , and for generating a signal according to the intensity of the detected radiation. A data processor is used in monitoring changes in the intensity of radiation that is detected by the sensor (10) due to changes in the opacity of cement in the container (2) to radiation from the source (6,8) as it cures.

A delivery device has a reservoir for receiving mixed bone cement discharged from the mixing chamber with a proximal end opening and a delivery port in the opposed distal end. A plunger is disposed within the reservoir and has a head for moving from the reservoir proximal end opening towards the reservoir distal end to drive cement out of the delivery port. The reservoir has an entry port and a transfer conduit extends from a mixing chamber exit port to the reservoir entry port for transferring the cement into the reservoir. A one-way valve allowing flow into and preventing flow out of the reservoir is mounted to the reservoir entry port.
