A bone tapping kit for cutting an internal thread into bone defining a bore. The kit comprises 1) a guide component with a threaded aperture (36) which, when in position, is aligned with the bore, and 2) a tap (100) having a first portion (102) with a first diameter (d 3 ) and an external thread (110) designed to engage with the threaded aperture of the guide component, and a second portion (104) having a second diameter (d 4 ) which is smaller than the first diameter and a helical cutting edge designed so that it can be received into the bore and cut an internal thread therein. The guide component and tap are dimensioned so that when the tap is introduced into the guide component the first portion engages with the threaded aperture in the guide component before the helical cutting edge of the second portion engages with the bore. Thus, the thread configuration that is cut into the bore forms a continuation of the same helix defined by the internal thread of the aperture of the guide member.

A method of determining the offset of the head part of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis stem component, relative to the neck of the stem part on which the head part can be fitted, involves obtaining a first and second images of the patient's joint on a non-coincident first and second planes. Template parts are fitted to the first and second images of the bone, which have markings (36, 42) on them which can be placed relative to the head part and the stem part respectively of the patient's bone, and scales (41) for measuring first and second displacements which are the distances between the axis of the head part and the axis of the neck of the patient's bone measured in the first and second planes. Reference data is used to calculate from the first and second displacements the r, ϑ coordinates of the axis of the head part relative to the axis of the neck of the stem part, where r is the absolute distance between the axis of the head part and the axis of the neck of the stem part, and ϑ is a measure of the angular location of the axis of the head part around the axis of the neck of the stem part.

This invention is a knee prosthesis (11) including a tibial component (47) for mounting to the proximal end of a tibia, and a femoral component (23) for mounting to the distal end of a femur. At least the face surface (31) of the medial condylar portion of the femoral component (23) may be preferably substantially congruent with the face surface (45) of a medial cavity in the upper surface of the tibial component so that substantially complete surface to surface contact between the face surface (45) of the medial cavity in the upper surface of the tibial component (47), and the face surface (31) of the medial condylar portion of the femoral component (23), is provided throughout a significant portion of the range of flexion of the knee joint. The tibial component (47) may include a base member (53), an articular bearing member (67) movably positioned on the upper surface of the base member (53), and structure (61) for restricting the movement of the lateral portion of the articular bearing (67) member relative to the base member, to allow a swinging motion thereof relative to the medial portion of the articular bearing member.

A modular prosthesis, such as a shoulder prosthesis, enables the selection of one of multiple alternate offset locations of a head member, such as a humeral head member, on a stem member, such as a humeral head member, together with the selection of any rotational orientation of the head member within a full 360° range of rotational orientation relative to the stem member, so as to locate and orient the head member secured on the stem member for optimum replication of the natural joint replaced by the prosthesis.
