摘要: A prosthetic hip-joint includes: a. a prosthetic acetabulum cup for implantation into a pelvis; b. a prosthetic femoral assembly which includes: i. a ball-shaped femoral head that during implantation becomes located within the cup; and ii. a femoral stem that is fixed at a first end to the head, and that has a second end distal from the first end which is adapted for implantation into a medullary canal of a femur; and c. a liner assembly adapted to be secured to the cup and is also adapted to receive and to constrain the head against dislocation. In one aspect the hip-joint permits the head to rotate through an angle which exceeds at least 153 degrees while concurrently constraining the head against dislocation. In another aspect the hip-joint constrains the head against dislocation by a preestablished amount of force which is adjustable during implantation thereof.

摘要: An implantable prosthetic hip joint includes a spherical acetabular shell articulating within the acetabulum socket of a pelvis and including a spherical shell portion defining an inner spherical surface, and a skirt portion extending downwardly there from; a femoral head including a femoral head and a stem secured to the femur of the person; a hemispherical bearing insert mounted in the spherical shell portion for receiving the femoral head for ball-and-socket movement therein; a retractable split annular rim positioned below the bearing insert and including a central opening which permits passage of the femoral head therethrough, and an inner ring surface, the rim including concentric threads along the outer surface thereof which releasably mate with concentric threads along the inner surface of the skirt portion to secure the rim in a first position spaced from the bearing insert and a second position at least substantially in contact with the bearing insert, with an annular recess being defined between the bearing insert and the split rim when the split rim is secured in the first position; and a split spring ring which retains the femoral head in the bearing insert, and includes an annular inner arcuate surface biased into engagement with the femoral head and being movable in the annular recess when the split rim is secured in the first position and being held by the inner ring surface when the split rim is secured in the second position.

摘要: Bipolar prostheses which include various structures and other techniques for optimizing material wear and mechanical strength properties. Such prostheses feature, for example, improved resistance to polyethylene wear while also reducing potential for dislocation of the femoral stem from the prosthesis. Such techniques and structures include varying wear resistance and mechanical strength treatment in various components of the prostheses or portions of those components as desired to improve, accentuate or optimize wear performance and dislocation reduction, locking ring structural features, structures for retaining locking rings in the bipolar prosthesis shell, and structures for limiting or reducing movement or rotation of locking rings and liners in bipolar prosthesis shells.

摘要: An acetabular cup assembly (10) for use with a femoral implant (22). The cup assembly (10) includes an outer shell (12), a bearing liner (14) configured to fit into a cavity (28) in the shell (12), a generally annular retaining ring (16) and a locking ring (18) configured to hold the retaining ring (16) in the shell (12) adjacent the bearing liner (14). The locking ring (18) is slidable between locked and free configurations, with at least part of the locking ring (18) being formed as a closed loop to prevent radial contraction of the locking ring inner surface (66) as the locking ring (18) is slid between the free and locked configurations. At least one small circumferential rib (68,70) is formed on the outer surface (64) of the locking ring (18) to engage a corresponding circumferential groove (34,36) in the shell (12) when the locking ring (18) is installed therein in the locked configuration.

摘要: An acetabular cup assembly for use with a femoral implant. The cup assembly includes an outer shell, a bearing liner configured to fit into a cavity in the shell, a generally annular retaining ring and a locking ring configured to hold the retaining ring in the shell adjacent the bearing liner. The locking ring is slidable between locked and free configurations, with at least part of the locking ring being formed as a closed loop to prevent radial contraction of the locking ring inner surface as the locking ring is slid between the free and locked configurations. At least one small circumferential rib is formed on the outer surface of the locking ring to engage a corresponding circumferential groove in the shell when the locking ring is installed therein in the locked configuration.
