A method and composition for the reduction of the emission of selenium into the environment from the burning of fossil fuels with the use of two chemistries, either individually or in combination with each other. The method uses polydithiocarbamic compounds, including polydithiocarbamic compounds derived from a polymer produced from acrylic-x and alkylamine in conjunction with a scrubber process to capture selenium and reduce its emission in aqueous phase blowdown. The method and composition also helps reduce corrosion in the scrubber process.

A method is specified for separating carbon dioxide from a flue gas (RG) of an incineration system, wherein bicin (31) and/or EDTA (30) is mixed as an oxidation inhibitor into a scrubbing solution (A) with an amine-containing absorption agent (e.g. 20), the flue gas (RG) is brought into contact with the scrubbing solution (A) prepared in such a manner for absorption of the carbon dioxide contained therein, and the scrubbing solution (A) is then thermally treated, the carbon dioxide being desorbed thereby. A corresponding scrubbing solution (A) comprising an amine-containing absorption agent (e.g. 20) and comprising bicin (31) and/or EDTA (30) as an oxidation inhibitor is also specified.

There is provided a process for reducing formaldehyde content of a gas comprising contacting the gas with a basic aqueous oxidizing solution comprising H2O2 so as to oxidize at least a part of the formaldehyde contained in the gas into formic acid. Thus, a gas having a reduced content in formaldehyde as compared to the gas before the process and a solution comprising formic acid, are so-obtained. Such a process can be particularly useful for treating various types of gases containing formaldehyde.

The present invention provides a catalytic composition for use in an oxidation-reduction process for effecting the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in gas strains comprising a water soluble iron compound, a mixture of two chelating agents, whereas both of the chelating agents are amine chelating agents, and at least one stabilizer. Further the present invention provides a process for preparing the catalytic composition according to the invention, said composition being advantageous in effecting the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in gas strains, comprising the steps of preparing a mixture of a water soluble iron compound and a stabilizing agent in an aqueous system, while the pH of the system is pH ≤ 2, adding a mixture of two chelating agents I and II, whereas both of the chelating agents are amine chelating agents to the mixture of the water soluble iron compound and a stabilizing agent, adding sufficient aqueous amine chelating agents II to this combined mixture to adjust a pH of 7 to 10, and heating this mixture of to get the desired concentration of chelated iron in the mixture. Therefore, the procedure of the present invention provides an alkaline aqueous chelated iron solution useful in oxidation-reduction processes for effecting the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in gas strains and provides, as mentioned before, (1) no foaming and no sludge, (2) a minimum decomposition of the chelant during the reaction, (3) a homogeneous and very concentrated catalytic iron chelate reagent with a possible iron concentration of >40 wt% and (4) a minimum rate of absorption of CO 2 into the solution and maximum rate of stripping of CO 2 by air bubbling.

In accordance with the invention the gas stream is contacted with an oxidizing agent present in a vessel, whereby said hydrogen sulfide is oxidized into elemental sulfur and said oxidizing agent is reduced, wherein oxygen containing gas is also fed to said vessel, wherein said oxygen oxidizes at least part of said reduced oxidizing agent.
