A method and apparatus are provided, for forming a filter element including a media pack in the form of a coiled web of fluted filter media, by feeding the web of fluted filter media at a controlled linear speed onto a mandrel rotated by a winding motor providing a controlled driving torque to the mandrel, to thereby maintain a controlled tension on the web of fluted filter media as the web is wound onto the mandrel. A filter module comprises a body (2, Fig 1) of wound layers of a sheet material, having an inlet plane 3, an outlet plane 4 and a winding axis 21 extending from the inlet plane to the outlet plane. The sheet material has a plurality of openings 5, 6 forming two types of channels 5, 6 within the wound layers of sheet material of the body. The channels extend in a direction parallel to the winding axis between the inlet plane and the outlet plane. A first type of channel is open at one end at the inlet plane and closed at the other end located adjacent to the outlet plane. A second type of channel is open at one end at the outlet plane and closed at the other end located adjacent to the inlet plane. The channels of the first type are separated from the channels of the second type by portions of sheet material. A fluid may flow from a fluid inlet 19 into the openings forming the first type of channel 5 or to an outer peripheral surface 12 or directly through the inlet plane 3, and through the flat filter sheet material 7, 8, then into the openings forming the second type of channel 6 or into a passage 18 or directly through the outlet plane 4, and finally to a fluid outlet 20. The sheet material may be wound around a support element in a process for manufacturing the filter module.
