A by-pass oil refining device (10) for an internal combustion engine is equipped with an atomizing nozzle (38) that constricts oil flow from a solid contaminant filtering element (14) to a vaporization chamber (24) where liquid contaminants are vaporized. The atomizing nozzle (38) has a constricting orifice (40) which is of a diameter sufficiently large to allow recirculation of oil to the vehicle engine, but which is small enough so that oil emanating from the filtering element (14) and entering the vaporization chamber (24) is atomized into a mist. Atomization of the oil significantly increases the extent to which liquid contaminants are vaporized and removed.

Ein Verfahren zur Beseitigung von Wasser und/oder anderen flüchtigen Verunreinigungen aus Schmierölen, insbesondere für Brennkraftmaschinen, besteht darin, daß das Schmieröl, vorzugsweise nach dem Hindurchführen durch einen Filtereinsatz (11), einer beheizten Verdampfungskammer (4) zugeleitet wird, in der ein Unterdruck, vorzugsweise zwischen 20 und 30 bar, aufrechterhalten wird, wodurch die Verdampfung des Wassers und/oder der anderen flüchtigen Verunreinigungen in der Verdampfungskammer erfolgt. Die bei der Verdampfung entstehenden Gase werden aus der Verdampfungskammer (4) abgeführt. Bei der Vorrichtung zur Durchführung dieses Verfahrens weist die Verdampfungskammer (4) wenigstens eine Einlaßöffnung (10) für das zu reinigende Schmieröl sowie eine Auslaßöffnung (21) für das gereinigte Schmieröl und eine Austrittsöffnung (22) für die bei der Verdampfung entstehenden Gase auf, wobei die Austrittsöffnung (22) über eine Leitung (6) mit einer Vakuumeinrichtung (7,8) in Verbindung steht.

An industrial oil reconditioning system forces dirty oil through a three-stage filter which usually includes a first stage comprising a blend of relatively flexible fibers and rigid fibers, a second stage which is all flexible fiber material, and a third stage, preferably of animal fiber. As the oil is forced through the system, under pressure, the fibers of the first and second stages are compressed. The fibers of the first and second stages are cut to a length which causes a weaving or matting during compression to prevent channels from forming in the filter through which oil might pass without being cleaned. The heat of the oil may be precisely controlled at different points in the system to thin the oil, to break emulsions, and to vaporize contaminant fluids. The filtering materials and temperatures may be varied depending upon the type of oil and contaminants being processed. Most industrial oils can be satisfactorily cleaned with one pass through the system. A number of convenience features are built into the system.
