The method serves for producing an adsorber through which flow takes place horizontally and which has two adsorbents and contains two directly adjacent charges of bulk material in a horizontal or upright container. There is a vertical boundary surface between the two charges of bulk material. In one step (a), a vertical partition wall is placed on the base of the adsorption bed and then, on each side of the partition wall, in each case one of the two adsorbents is introduced up to a first height, which does not exceed the upper periphery of the partition ring. In the following step (b), the vertical partition wall is displaced upwards to the extent where its lower periphery is still contained in the charge of bulk material present. Then, on each side of the partition wall, in each case one of the two adsorbents is introduced up to a second height, which does not exceed the upper periphery of the displaced partition wall. Finally, step (b) is repeated until such time as a predetermined filling height is reached. According to the invention, the vertical partition wall is constructed from at least three partition-wall modules (6.01), which extend only over part of the length, or of the circumference, of the vertical partition wall and can be moved independently of one another in the vertical direction.

The filter system (10) may act as a purifier and a muffler for heavy and light duty diesel vehicles. The invention is a unique dual pass filter system that removes particulates and nitrogen oxides in successive passes before the gas exits the filter (10). The regeneration system (64) includes an electric-powered heat source for safety and better control of the regeneration process. A motor vehicle application is also disclosed.

Disclosed embodiments address contaminant management challenges that arise during production of desirably contaminant free product fluid in the operation of PSA equipment, and further address the more serious challenges that arise under intermittent operation of PSA equipment. One embodiment includes a breather fluidly coupled to a feed end of an adsorber with a contaminant-sensitive adsorbent. The breather can be coupled to the feed end through a shutoff valve closed during production and open during shutdown. Other embodiments use particular sealing strategies for additional sealing of the apparatus, or at least components thereof, from contaminant ingress. For example, a buffer seal for receiving a buffer gas having a contaminant vapor content substantially the same as or less than a product gas produced by a pressure swing adsorption process over the adsorbers. As a second example, a parking seal can be used that typically is engaged when the apparatus is parked.
