A porous hollow fiber membrane which has high blocking performance and high water permeability suitable for filtration and the like and exhibits excellent strength, and a process for stably producing the porous hollow fiber membrane are disclosed. The process utilizes a hollow fiber molding nozzle having two or more circular discharge ports which are disposed concentrically. Multilayer melt-extrusion is performed by discharging molten mixtures which include a thermoplastic resin and an organic liquid and differ in composition from the adjacent discharge ports. The resulting product is cooled to solidify to obtain a hollow fiber. The organic liquid is then removed from the hollow fiber by extraction to produce a porous hollow fiber membrane. The molten mixture discharged from at least one circular discharge port includes an inorganic fine powder in addition to the thermoplastic resin and the organic liquid. The inorganic fine powder is removed by extraction after cooling in addition to the organic liquid.

The polyethylene porous film is produced by molding a film using a mixture of the ultrahigh weight polyethylene and the polyethylene having a weight average molecular weight of from 10,000 to 800,000, biaxially drawing the film, then heat-treating and redrawing the film to form pores in the film.

The membrane has a porosity in the range of greater than 35% to less than 50% by volume and a permeance for CO 2 of 20-60 mol/(h·m 2 ·bar), a gas separation factor α(CO 2 /N 2 ) of at least 5 and a selectivity CO 2 / anesthetic agents of at least 150. The process for producing this membrane is based on a thermally induced phase separation process in which process a homogeneous solution of a poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) in a solvent system containing compounds A and B is formed, wherein compound A is a strong solvent and compound B a weak non-solvent for the polymer component. After formation of a hollow fiber the hollow fiber is cooled in a liquid cooling medium to form a hollow fiber membrane. The concentration of the polymer component in the solution may be between 42.5- and 45.8 wt.-% and the hollow fiber leaving the die runs through a gap between die and cooling medium with a gap length in the range of 5-30 mm.
