A gravity blender 1 for receiving particulate material comprises a silo 2 having a cylindrical upper portion 4 and a hollow interior 3 and a mixing chamber 8. A plurality of blending conduits 10 is provided externally of the cylindrical upper portion and extend downwards from the upper portion of the silo to communicate with the mixing chamber. A plurality of passageways 20 each extend from a respective upper outlet 22 from the hollow interior into a respective blending conduit such that the particulate material can flow from the hollow interior to the mixing chamber via the blending conduits. The blending conduits also extend upwards, beyond the respective upper outlet to a respective access location allowing access to the blending conduit for cleaning purposes.

A method and apparatus (1) is provided for blending solid particulate material in a vessel (10) which includes a center lift column (20) and a first downcomer channel (30) which includes n successive vertical sections (51,56) and n flow ports (P1-P6) respective located at a top portion of the n sections. The n sections include withdrawal structure for providing a volumetric outlet flow rate which includes a flow rate contribution from each of the n sections which is 1/n of the outlet flow rate. The apparatus can also include a second channel (30A) which includes a plurality of vertically spaced inlets (33a-33e) for receiving particulate material from different vertical locations within a blending vessel of the apparatus and an outlet (71) for returning particulate material to the lower part of the vessel, with each of the inlets of the second channel including a baffle (36) extending into an internal flow area of the channel. A discharge spout (70) is connected to the outlet of the second channel and recycles a portion of the particulate material at the outlet to the lower part of the vessel (10) and withdraws another part of the particulate material at the outlet to a conveying line (60) outside the vessel.

A blending apparatus, inexpensive in construction and requiring a minimum of recirculation, is today essential for economical and thorough blending of particulate material, for example, plastic pellets of virgin material and of pellets that have been reconstituted from recycled material. Construction of the blender is low in cost not only because the customary receiver, and its piping, conventionally installed below the blender are eliminated, but because the rigid baffle of the prior blender has been replaced by a virtual baffle (626) of particulate material, which forms a toroidal block within: the conically walls (610) of the blender; the converging blended conduits (602) adjacent thereto; and the structural supporting matrix. The baffle of particulate material (626) serves: 1) as a termination surface for the conventional perforated blending conduits; and 2) retains a toroidal annular volume of particulate material in position between the upper outer surface of the baffle and the inside wall of the blender.

A blending bin for particulate having a plurality of vertically extending passageways is provided. Each passageway includes multiple vertically spaced ports. Blending vanes are provided within each passageway to control the proportion of material withdrawn from the bin through the ports. The streams of material are in turn proportionally combined into a single outlet stream. The ports are spaced such that lots of material loaded into the bin will be blended together in the outlet stream and such that thin layers of off-grade or non-uniform material will not reach disproportionate levels in the outlet stream.

Particulate materials are blended in a vessel provided with a plurality of vertically extending conduits therein. The vessel comprises a downwardly converging frustoconically shaped bottom wall which defines the lower region of the vessel. The conduits are provided with opening within the upper region of the vessel and the lower ends of the conduits extend through the bottom wall, each communicating via a corresponding inclined conduit with a solids outlet at the open bottom of the bottom wall. At least one drain conduit communicates between a corresponding opening in the bottom wall and a corresponding inclined conduit. A baffle is disposed within the vessel separating the upper and lower regions and comprises a downwardly converging inverted Igenerally conical portion spaced above the bottom wall and defining therebetween a downwardly converging annular passage. Various arrangements of positioning and spacing of drain conduits and corresponding openings in the bottom wall are disclosed to improve flow, sampling and blending of particulate materials from the lower region of the vessel.

A gravity flow blending system for granular materials by use of novel internal handling means which provides for a continuous, uniform withdrawal of material from a multitude of locations (18a, b) in a large capacity bin. The invention utilizes basic principles of solids rheology to provide for a natural internal self-regulation which makes it possible to use this system for a wide range of material discharge rates and granular material types.
