The invention relates to a device for carrying out chemical reactions. Said device comprises a reaction slider in which a plurality of through openings are configured as reaction chambers and a selection slider which is arranged on the upper surface of the reaction slider and which has at least one traversing control opening. Said selection slider is displaceable relative to the reaction slider in such a manner that the control opening thereof is aligned with one of the reaction chambers of the reaction slider so that a traversing connection for supply of the reaction chamber with a predetermined reagent is formed. The device is further provided with a slider for chemical agents which is arranged below the reaction slider and which is configured with through openings for feeding chemicals to the individual reaction chambers of the reaction slider. The invention provides a means for impinging the sliders with a predetermined force and further provides a valve arrangement with which chemicals can be fed to the chemical slider as a premix.

Multiple chemical reactions are performed in a plurality of reaction vessels (12) mounted in inlets in a manifold valve block (30). The manifold valve block (30) is connected to a channel block (34) which is utilized in conjunction with a solvent delivery system (21) as part of the reaction cycle. The solvent fluid is drained from the reaction vessels (12) when valves in the manifold valve block (30) are opened while applying a vacuum thereto. Optionally, a thermal block (40) may be utilized in conjunction with the manifold valve block (30) and the channel block (34) to facilitate the reaction. Upon completion of the reactant cycle, the manifold valve block (30) is disconnected from the channel block (34) and connected to a cleavage block assembly (120, 121) which contains vials (128) for collecting reaction products. The cleavage product is drained from the reaction vessels (12) through the manifold valve block (30) into the vials (128) upon opening the valves in the manifold valve block (30) and applying a vacuum to the channel block (34).

A valve block assembly having internal delivery channels and a common outlet channel is provided with two delivery valve surfaces with access to the common channel. The common channel comprises easily cleaned linear sections 26, 126 running alternately from one surface to the other, and connecting surface grooves 25, 125 at the valve sites. Diaphragm valves 19, 20, 21 are provided with relief grooves 4a to accommodate deformation of the diaphragm 5. The V-like cross-section of the connecting grooves 25, 125 of the common channel and the conical shape of the nearby outlet 24a of a delivery channel 24 assure that the valve may be opened by only a small actuating force. Reservoirs 10 feeding the delivery channels 24 have an inert atmosphere controlled by pressurizing and venting channels 22, 23 in the valve block 16, 116. Exposure of plastic tubing to oxygen is kept to a minimum. The assembly is particularly adapted for use in a protein sequencer to supply reactants without cross-contamination or oxidative decomposition.

The device comprises a plurality of different types of continuous flow modules and a valve assembly for connecting the continuous flow modules to each other in a parallel or radial manner. This arrangement allows conducting convergent chemical reaction sequences by pre-synthesizing and intermediately storing or simultaneously synthesizing at least one intermediate product which is needed in the main synthetic reaction sequence in order to obtain the final product.
