Provided are a dust collection system and a dust collection method that make it possible to efficiently collect fine particles included in a gas. The dust collection system includes: a flow path route through which a gas flows; a droplet supply section for supplying droplets to the flow path route; an electrostatic agglomeration unit that is arranged in the flow path route downstream from the position at which droplets are supplied, forms an electric field in the flow path of the gas, electrostatically charges the droplets and fine particles included in the gas, and causes the fine particles and the droplets to collide (agglomerate); and a dust collection section that is arranged in the flow path route downstream from the electrostatic agglomeration unit and collects the droplets and fine particles.

An ion generating element (10) has at least one first discharger (12) for generating positive ions and at least one second discharger (13) for generating negative ions, both fitted or printed on a single dielectric member (11). The first and second dischargers (12) and (13) are each composed of a pair of a first or second discharging electrode (12a) or (13a), respectively, formed on the surface of the dielectric member (11) and a first or second induction electrode (12b) or (13b), respectively, buried in the dielectric member (11), and are arranged both on the same flat surface of the dielectric member (11) but separately from and independently of each other. This construction helps to alleviate the neutralization among the generated ions themselves, thus to effectively release both positive and negative ions, and thereby to enhance the ion generation efficiency.

An electrical dust collector for collecting and removing dust particles in a room air by ionizing the dust particles. The charged plate (10) collects the ionized dust particles and is provided with a plurality of through holes (10a) each of which has an erected dust collect electrode (11) provided at a side thereof. The discharge plate (20) ionizes the dust particles and is arranged with respect to the charged plate (10) such that it faces and is spaced apart from the charged plate (10) with a distance provided between them. The discharge plate (20) is provided with a plurality of discharge electrodes (21) which is erected in an opposite direction to the dust collect electrodes (11) of the charged plate (10). This dust collector causes a uniform electric potential and a uniform electric field to be provided between the charged plate (10) and the discharge plate (20) and, as a result, provides a uniform charge between the plates, thereby improving the dust collect efficiency.

Apparatus for electrically charging particles in a gas stream comprises an ionizer having at least one plate (19) for connection to one terminal of a high voltage unidirectional current source and a plurality of needles forming at least one corona discharge electrode (21) for connection to the other terminal of said source. For collecting the charged particles, the apparatus includes, downstream of the ionizer, a non-corona deflector electrode (23) for connection to the terminal of the high voltage source having the same polarity as the charge on the particles, and a collecting plate which can be a continuation of plate (19). Preferred embodiments of the invention include circuitrythat in combination with the ionizer quenches arcs while maintaining the voltage across the ionizer. A further preferred feature is the inclusion of a wash header by means of which the collecting plate can be continuously irrigated. The apparatus is operated with a voltage gradient in the ionizer of 6KV/cm or higher, and a corona current between the needles and plate (19) having a density of at least 4 ma/m2.
