If so desired, an ammonium salt such as ammonium chloride may also be used to enhance the regenerative powers of the hydrogen halide. For example, the surface of steel may be treated with hydrogen chloride and ammonium chloride to enhance the formation of ferric oxide which possesses a greater electrical conductivity than does ferrous oxide.

Said basic units consist of an outer covering (4), of an insulating material (3) having two or more layers, and of a sheet metal insert (14), and are hung via connectors on the supports (5) attached to the wall (6) of the object to be insulated. The basic units (2) have an all around covering which gives them a high level of inherent stability and which enables the absorption of high levels of thermal stress. The layers (12, 13) of the insulating material (3) slightly overlap so that a graduation is provided at points where they join. Said graduation ensures an overlapping (22) of adjacent basic units (2, 2') without the risk of thermal bridges resulting at this location. A heat compensation channel remains between the wall and the inside (10) of the insulating enclosure (1).
