The present invention comprises a process and apparatus for separation of hydrocarbons from hydrocarbon-containing produced water, wherein in a water tank two chambers are formed by a separation plate (30): an upper chamber (29) and a lower chamber (33) so as to carry out a 2-stage process. In stage 1 the hydrocarbon-containing produced water is supplied with a gas-containing component, whereupon a gas- and hydrocarbon-containing produced water mixture is fed to an inlet tube (22) in the center of a tank, whereupon the said mixture is tangentially distributed via at least one nozzle (7) and at least one baffle plate (8.1). The separated hydrocarbons are conveyed to at least one upper oil outlet (10) from the tank and partially cleaned water is directed to stage 2 in the lower chamber (33). Separated oil is discharged from this lower chamber (33) via a second outlet (36) and the cleaned water is conveyed to an outlet (12) from the tank.

The process is carried out in an enclosed tank using a separation procedure that maintains the state of the separated solids in the same state as they were upon introduction to the system, i.e., aerobic, anaerobic or anoxic, based on the condition of the solids upon introduction to the system. The system utilizes rotary flow instead of rakes to harvest the solids from the effluent. The process has applications in the recovery of emulsion in wastewater treatment and the operation of digesters for re-feeding to the digester.

The treatment apparatus includes a vertically oriented vessel (11) with tangentially disposed injection nozzles including one or more water input inlets (P 1 ,P 2 ) for the introduction of production water and one or more recycle fluid/sparge gas inlets (R 1 ,R 2 ,R 3 ,R 4 ) for the introduction of recycled water from the vessel (11) and a sparge gas. The tangential orientation of the injection nozzles creates a cyclonic flow within the vessel for improved sparge gas bubble/hydrocarbon contact. A hydrocarbon-rich layer migrates to the top surface (14) of the liquid in the vessel (11) where it is removed about a center axis of the vessel (11). The resulting hydrocarbon-lean production water has a sufficiently low hydrocarbon content that it is eligible for more intensive processing, such as with organophillic clay cartridges.

The invention relates to a device and a method for chemically and physically separating solid materials from a suspension using flotation. A rotationally symmetrical flocculation/flow reactor (20) is provided with outlets in the lower part thereof and is arranged in a separating tank (12). At least one suspension inlet (24) extends eccentrically into said reactor. The supplied suspension is guided into the upper area of the flocculation reactor (20) via the suspension inlet (24). A circular flow is thus created which drains off from the flocculation reactor (20) downwards in a tangential and radial manner over the outer circumference into circularly arranged distribution cells (44) which reinforce the tangential component of the suspension flow when said flow is delivered into the separating tank (12). In prior art, the flow of the mixture consisting of the suspension and air-sacs extends radially outwards. One advantage of the invention is that said flow of the mixture has to travel a longer way to the outlets in the area of the wall of the tank due to the tangential flow component. The solid matter can be separated more effectively by virtue of the longer travel path or the longer presence in the separating tank.
