Apparatus and methods for dispensing small beads of a viscous, mixed fluid material formed by first and second viscous fluids. The apparatus includes first (62) and second (64) metering rods for moving in a reciprocating manner, such that the first metering rod (62) extends into a first fluid passageway (52), and the second metering rod (64) extends into a second fluid passageway (54). A mixing passage (80) communicates with the first and second fluid passageways to receive the first and second viscous fluids from the first and second fluid passageways. A dispensing passageway (82) is in fluid communication with the mixing passage, and dispenses a small bead of viscous, mixed fluid material formed by the mixed first and second viscous fluids. A control (104) retracts the first and second metering rods to prevent drooling of the viscous, mixed fluid material from the dispensing passageway after a dispensing cycle.

The web of carpet first passes through a preheating station, and after the carpet has been brought to temperature the web of carpet is fed to the coating station, the web of carpet first being compressed to a desired thickness. After that the web of carpet runs in the compressed state along the spray aperture of a spray head of a hot melt unit, where a hot melt such as a Vestoplast is applied as a coating to the back of the hot web of carpet. The compression of the web of carpet is then removed, and the web of carpet is then conveyed through an after-heating station. Both in the preheating station and in the after-heating station air is forced or sucked through the carpet transversely to the plane of the carpet. In the device for applying the coating the gap which determines how far the carpet is compressed is adjustable.

A method of forming a seamed metal tube (20c) having a metal coating (56) on at least an inside surface of the tube (20c) from a continuously moving, relatively flat metal strip (20a) is disclosed. The primary feature of the inventive process is the step, after forming and welding the seamed metal tube (20c), of locating the seam in a lower portion of the tube (20c) and reheating at least that lower portion of the tube (20c) to melt the coating (56). The coating (56) is thereby caused to flow downwardly over and to coat the inner surface of the seam. The result is a seamed tube (20c) with a more corrosion resistant seam region.
