This invention relates to novel methods for removing paint, lacquers and other coatings from metal and alloy materials, in particular metallic cans. One method of the present invention involves a combination of steps including: (i) a pre-treatment step to alter the structure of the paint, lacquer or other coating, such pre-treatment preferably involving heat, making the coating more amenable to biostripping; and (ii) contacting the metal or alloy material with a bacterial culture capable of removing said coating. In an alternative method the combination of steps includes: (i) a heat treatment step to alter the structure of the paint, lacquer or other coating; and (ii) an abrasive treatment involving contacting the heat treated coated metal or alloy material in step (i) with a similarly heated material and/or with an untreated and/or uncoated like metal or alloy material, wherein the contact is caused by rolling in a rolling reactor. The abrasion step makes the paint, lacquer or coating of the metal or alloy in step (2) amenable to stripping with a fluid which fluid is either present in the rolling reactor or is jet sprayed onto the heat treated and abraded coated metal or alloy material. The removed paint, lacquer or other coating, and/or the liquid used to remove the coating is treated with orgamisms such as bacteria, capable of degrading said coating, before subsequent disposal.

The present disclosure provides a method of flushing a reactor used in the production of linear alpha olefins, including flushing reactor equipment with toluene from a solvent source, wherein the reactor contains by-products from the production of the linear alpha olefins, wherein the by-products include a polymeric material. The flushed toluene containing polymeric material is directed into a separation train containing the linear alpha olefins, wherein the polymeric material is soluble in at least one of the linear alpha olefins. The linear alpha olefins can be separated from the toluene and the toluene is recycled to the solvent source.

Disclosed is an apparatus for cleaning a vulcanization die, including: a vacuum processing chamber (2); an electrode (7) arranged in the vacuum processing chamber; a high frequency power supply (10) connected to the electrode and a vulcanization die (9) placed in the vacuum processing chamber (2); and a gas introducing pipe (3) connected to the vacuum processing chamber (2), for introducing a reactive gas into the vacuum processing chamber; wherein a voltage is applied between the electrode (7) and the die (9) to generate a plasma of the reactive gas having been introduced into the vacuum processing chamber (2), and the plasma is allowed to react with an elastomer residue stuck on the surface of the die (9), thereby removing the elastomer residue by ashing. The apparatus is characterized by further including a microwave cavity resonator (12) for generating a plasma, arranged in the gas introducing pipe (3); wherein the reactive gas is excited through the plasma generated by the microwave cavity resonator (12), and is then introduced into the vacuum processing chamber (2). According to the apparatus and method thereof, an elastomer residue stuck on the surface of a vulcanization die (9) can be efficiently, certainly removed by ashing for a short period of time, with the reduced supply and discharge amounts of a reactive gas used.

The method comprises the steps of (a) dissolving dope from the filters using a hot solvent for the dope, (b) washing the solvent from the filters using hot water, (c) pyrolysing remnants of dope or solvent in the filters, (d) ultrasonically washing the pyrolysed particles from the filters, (e) reheating the filters to dislodge pyrolysed particles, (f) ultrasonically rewashing the filters and (g) drying the filters.
