The present invention relates to a method and process for manufacturing an improved machine tool collet (10). The invention further relates to an improved machine tool collet (10) having design parameters optimized to maximize the gripping strength of the collet (10). The collet (10) is of the type having a plurality of gripping jaws (16) spaced around a common longitudinal axis (18) with resilient material (12) between the gripping jaws (16). The method includes calculating the total torque (TN) generated on a bar passing through the collet (10) for a given collet configuration having predetermined design parameters. At least one of the design parameters of the collet (10) is varied and the total torque (TN) generated is recalculated until the total torque (TN) reaches a maximum value for the given collet configuration. In this manner, at least one design parameter can be varied and optimized for maximizing the gripping strength of the collet (10).

A tapping collet (10) is actuated by engagement with a mating surface of a collet holder for holding a tap (12) having a round shank portion (14) and a square shank portion (16). The collet (10) has a plurality of independent gripping jaws (18) circumferentially disposed at essentially 90 degree intervals about a centerline axis (20) through the collet (10). The gripping jaws (18) have inner faces (22) parallel to the centerline axis (20) and outer faces (24) which define an outer surface (26) for engaging a collet holder mating surface. Resilient material (28) is disposed between the gripping jaws (18) for holding the jaws (18) in the desired spaced relation. The gripping jaws (18) comprise a step portion (34) which extends radially inward and defines a second inner diameter opening (32) to engage the flat sides of the square shank portion (16) of a tap (12) inserted into the collet (10). A continuous outer diameter seal (36) is disposed circumferentially about the outer surface of the collet (10) and a continuous inner diameter seal (38) is disposed circumferentially within a first inner diameter opening (30) of the collet (10).

An annular front end base portion (11), a main portion (10) and an annular rear end base portion (12) form all together a substantial portion of a collet (9) provided with a tapered outside surface adaptable closely in a tapered hole of a collet chuck and a tool holding hole (13) is formed in the axial portion of the collet (9). In the main portion (10) are formed a first set of axially long radial slits (14) opening at the end surface of said front end base portion (11) and terminating to be closing in the rear end base portion (12) and a second set of axially long radial slits (15) opening at the end surface of the rear end base portion (12) and terminating to be closing in the front base portion (11). Each of the radial slits (14) of the first set and each of the radial slits (15) of the second set are arranged at proper angular intervals and alternatively along the peripheral direction of the collet (9), and respective zigzag paths (16) are formed which are closed over the whole peripheries of the outside and inside surfaces of the collet (9), respectively. The outside and inside surfaces of the collet (9) contact closely the inside surface of said tapered hole and the outside surface of a tool fitted in the tool holding hole (13), respectively along the respective zigzag paths (16). The collet is able to contract radially owing to the radial slits (14,15) of the two sets and the cutting oil supplied to the collet (9) flows out of the collet outwards only through jets (19) provided for feeding oil.

A collet chuck, comprising the main body (11) of the chuck, a collet (12) which is fitted into the main body thereof, and a fastening nut (13) for chucking a cutting tool which is screwed into the main body of the chuck under the state where the fastening nut is detachably connected to the collet, thereby reducing the diameter of the collet, wherein an external flange (16) is provided on the collet (12), internal flanges (18a,b) are provided on the fastening nut (13), and while holding of these flanges (16, 18a,b) into one another permits the collet (12) and the fastening nut (13) to be detachably connected to each other, a pair of cutout sections (19) opposite to each other are formed on the inward flanges (18a,b) of the fastening nut (13) so that the mounting and detaching operation may be easily made.
