The tool is heated to an elevated temperature of between 600-1100 degrees C while in the protective environment for a period of 15-120 minutes. In another aspect of the invention, a drill is provided having a drill body (13) which has a cutting tip, an axis of symmetry, and a plurality of flutes (15), wherein the flutes (15) have a rake surface (17) at the cutting tip. The cutting tip comprises a plurality of side blade between the flutes (15) and joined at a web. A plurality of flank surfaces (27) extend from an outer diameter of the cutting tip to the axis of symmetry and a plurality of primary cutting edges (20) are present at the intersection of the flank surfaces (27) with the rake surfaces (17). The primary cutting edges (20) include either an angular or radius surface (21) or a combination thereof extending from the flank surfaces (27) to the rake surfaces (17).
