The invention relates to a cutting insert (10) having a cutting tip (3a) and a cutting edge (4a) for jointly performing a surface grinding-end facing operation. A second cutting edge (4b) is not normally active during the surface grinding-end facing operation performed by the cutting tip (3a) and the cutting edge (4a). However, said cutting edge (4b) may become active if the maximum end facing height of the cutting edge (4a) is unintentionally exceeded. The operator may not realise that the height has been exceeded due to the only slight incline between said cutting edges (4a, 4b). In order to avoid said drawback, another cutting edge (4c) is made as a groove between said two cutting edges (4a, 4b). Thus, said cutting edge (4c) machines a protrusion on the workpiece above the faced surface when the maximum end facing height of the cutting edge (4a) is exceeded. A curved cutting corner, or a corner consisting of a large number of short, respectively linear edge sections positioned at obtuse angles in relation to one another, is positioned between neighbouring cutting edges (10). According to the invention, the cutting surface comprises a bevel (14, 15), which extends along the cutting edge (10). The section of bevel lying in the centre of the cutting edge (10) is broader than the two adjacent bevelled areas on either side, the broader bevel being between 1.5 and 4 times as broad as the breadth of the laterally adjacent bevel.
