The present invention relates to an automatic grinding machine (1) for end mills for wood (7), programmable with optical reading of the geometric characteristics and computerized sharpening, constituted by a compact structure which can be rested on a fixed bench or on a movable trolley for service on machines for chip-forming machining. The grinding machine (1) has a computerized control panel (2) for CNC management, which actuates in cooperation and coordination various assemblies adapted for automated sharpening. A first optical reading assembly (5) with an arm (4) for automatic movement from an inactive position (3) to a position for detecting the geometric characteristics of the end mill (7). A second assembly (6) for holding the end mill (7), which is horizontal and longitudinal with respect to the machine, capable of moving on command forward and backward and/or simultaneously rotate the mill about its own axis. A third assembly (10) for supporting a cup grinding wheel (11) is mounted on the vertical frame (9), which rests on a circular and horizontal base capable of rotating on said plane. The grinding wheel can arrange itself above and below, longitudinally to the mill and/or in front of it, both on the right side and on the left side, in order to be able to sharpen end mills for wood of the type with left-handed helix and of the type with right-handed helix.

A method for grinding and forming a leading end flank face (4) is provided; wherein a grindstone (6) is used and a leading end flank face (4) is ground and formed on a leading end surface of a tool body (1) of a rotary cutting tool having three or more blades, several helically shaped swarf discharge flutes (2) are formed on a periphery of the tool body (1) from a leading end of the tool toward a trailing end, and a bottom blade (5) is provided on each intersecting ridgeline of leading end flank faces (4) of the tool body (1) and rake faces (3) of the swarf discharge flutes (2). When a tool-center side of one of the leading end flank faces (4) is ground and formed over a predetermined range, a direction (A) in which the grindstone (6) rotates is set at an intersecting angle (α) of less than 90° with respect to one of the bottom blades (5) associated with the one leading end flank face (4) to be ground and formed, and grinding is performed by the grindstone (6) with no interference occurring with any of the bottom blades (5) other than the one bottom blade (5).
