A method for manufacturing a cutting insert green body from a sinterable powder, a tool set for manufacturing the cutting insert green body by that method and the green body manufactured by the tool set. The tool set has axially moving upper and lower punches and radially moving side punches. The side punches move slidably on die rods. The side punches and die rods move in channels in a base body on which a cover plate is mounted. The upper and lower punches move in through holes in the cover plate and base body, respectively. The die rods are stationary during compaction of the sinterable powder. The upper, lower and side punches form surfaces of the green body and the die rods form some of the edges of the green body. The green body can have undercuts and the edges formed by the die rods can be non-linear in shape.

A method and device for manufacturing a cutting insert green body, the method includes the step of providing a compression tool having an upper and lower die, and an upper and lower punch. The upper die defines a punch tunnel in which the upper punch slides, and the lower die defines a punch tunnel in which the lower punch slides. The dies define a die cavity to accommodate a powder to be compressed by action of the respective punches to form the green body. Powder in the die cavity is compressed by forwarding the upper punch through the punch tunnel of the upper die and a predetermined distance L through the opening of the lower die. The upper die is displaced relative to the opening of the lower die and the upper punch is removed from the lower die to move the green body out of the lower die through the opening thereof.

The invention relates in general to sintering under pressure and with electrical current, often termed spark plasma sintering (SPS). Particular aspects of the invention are directed to a sintering device, a sintering process, a ceramic body product, an assembly comprising the ceramic body and the use of a graphite layer in a sintering process. The invention relates to a device having a sintering chamber (013), the sintering chamber being bordered by the following device parts: i. a first punch surface (004) of a first punch (003); ii. a second punch surface (007) of a second punch (008); and iii. an interior surface (005) of a die (006); wherein: the punches are adapted and arranged to apply a pressure of at least 1 MPa along a compression axis (011) to a target in the sintering chamber; the first punch and the second punch are connected to an electrical power source (012) adapted and arranged to provide a current of at least 5 kA; the first and second punches comprise at least 50 wt. % carbon, based on the total weight of the punch; the sintering chamber has a cross-sectional width W perpendicular to the compression axis of at least 300 mm; wherein a layer δ of a carbon material Cδ is present at at least part of the interior surface of the die, the layer δ having a mean thickness Dδ determined over the interior surface of the die, wherein Dδ is in the range from 1.1 to 8 mm.
