The present invention provides a method and apparatus for separating rubber components and metal components of tread portions (110) of road vehicle tyres (10). Each tread portion comprises a tread side (200) and a back side (220), and the method comprising the steps: forming a chain of tread portions by connecting a plurality of tread portions in a longitudinal direction, said tread portions being connected such that the tread side of each tread portion faces in the same direction, such that the chain of tread portions comprises a tread side and a back side; causing the tread side of at least a part of the chain of tread portions to contact a curved surface (125); and directing at least one high-pressure jet (140) against the back side (220) of the part of the chain of tread portions contacting the curved surface, to cause separation of the rubber components from the metal components. In a preferred arrangement the at least one high-pressure jet is at least one ultra high-pressure water jet. An apparatus is provided to perform the method.

The steel components (4, 5, 7) in the tire may be stressed to move away from the rubber components (6) prior to application of the high pressure fluid (9). The process yields four distinct products from a vehicle tire: crumb rubber, chunk rubber, high tensile steel, and plated steel. The process is easy to use, reliable, and portable. The rubber liner (1) can be softened prior to processing by the high pressure fluid (9) to improve the efficiency of the process.

On décrit un procédé de récupération de caoutchouc des pneumatiques de véhicules dans lequel on récupère le caoutchouc de qualité supérieure utilisé pour la bande de roulement séparément du caoutchouc de qualité inférieure utilisé pour les parois et pour d'autres zones du pneu. Le procédé consiste à séparer l'ensemble de la bande de roulement du reste du pneu, et ensuite à retirer de celle-ci le caoutchouc de qualité supérieure. Puis, on traite séparément le reste de la bande de roulement, ainsi que la paroi et le bourrelet du pneu afin de séparer le caoutchouc des éléments de renforcement métallique et textile. On récupère sous forme de particules le caoutchouc de qualité supérieure utilisé pour la bande de roulement ainsi que le caoutchouc restant de qualité inférieure.

A process and apparatus for the low temperature comminution of tires includes the separation of the tires into tire portions including tread portions, sidewall portions and bead portions. The tire portions are cooled and crushed to form rubber granules and scrap material. The rubber granules are sorted from the scrap material in a process that includes the step of suspending the granules in a moving stream of low temperature gas. The stream of gas and rubber granules is impacted on a solid surface to grind the granules. The low temperature gas is preferably recycled and cooled by heat exchange with another circulating low temperature gas such as nitrogen.
