A coinjection molding apparatus includes at least one manifold having a first manifold melt channel and a second manifold melt channel. A hot runner nozzle is located between the manifold and a mold gate. The nozzle has melt channels communicating with the first manifold melt channel and the second manifold melt channel. A valve has a movable valve member for increasing and decreasing flow of melt in one of the melt channels of the nozzle. The valve member receives a pressure force from the melt. An injection molding system is disclosed having a self-regulating valve for balancing melt flow. The self-regulating valve includes a control rod configured to balance the melt flow rate through a hot runner system. The self-regulating valve reacts to an injection or melt pressure within the hot runner system and a pre-set force provided by an external force device. The self-regulating valve is an open-loop system as it requires neither a measurement of pressure by a sensor nor feedback from a processor in order to regulate the melt flow. The self-regulating valve mechanically reacts to changes in melt pressure on control surfaces thereof by "bobbing" upwards/downwards to decrease/increase the melt flow accordingly. The self-regulating valve compensates for conditions that affect melt pressure, such as an increase/decrease in melt viscosity, changes in melt temperature, and/or mold cavity size without the use of a processing device.

According to one preferred embodiment, an injection molding apparatus is provided that includes a manifold (231), at least one injection nozzle (215) coupled to the manifold, an actuator, and a valve pin (200) adapted to reciprocate through the manifold and the injection nozzle. The valve pin (200) has a first end coupled to the actuator, a second end that closes the gate (211) in a forward position, and a control surface (205) intermediate said first and second ends for adjusting the rate of material flow during an injection cycle. Retracting the valve pin tends to decrease the rate of material flow during the injection cycle and displacing the valve pin toward the gate (211) tends to increase the rate of material flow during the injection cycle.

@ This invention relates to an injection molding system in which melt flows in channels in the outer surface of a heated probe seated in the cavity plate on its way to the gate leading to the cavity. The probe has a tip end in alignment with the gate and the probe is reciprocated between open and closed positions to valve gate the flow of melt to the cavity. According to a preferred embodiment, in a multi-cavity system a number of probes are fixed to a manifold which is actuated to valve gate all of the cavities simultaneously. Hydraulic cylinders are provided to drive the manifold to the closed position, and injection melt pressure acting on the tip ends of the probes is utilized to return them to the open position. Valve gating the heated probes provides the advantage of improved temperature control of the melt in the immediate gate area.
