A flooring grooving tool is provided which facilitates the cutting of grooves in the surfaces of abutting sheets of linoleum and other sheet material flooring, particularly in the coving areas where the flooring sheets are curved upwardly along the walls. The tool has an elongated handle bent to delineate a larger handgrip portion from a smaller mounting end. A cutting blade mount projects from the blade mounting end of the handle and receives a U-shaped cutting blade. A hairpin bend in the cutting blade is sharpened at both edges so that the blade can cut in either direction. A planar guide fin is formed on the cutting blade mount and is located at the grooving tunnel formed between hairpin bend in the cutting blade and the cutting blade mount. The guide fin fits into the crevice between adjacent sheets of flooring to be grooved to a depth limited by the flat floor contact surfaces on the cutting blade mount. The floor contact surfaces aid in maintaining the cutting blade at a uniform angle relative to the flooring surfaces.

The heat nozzle (12) of the invention couples the heating barrel (34) of a conventional floor seam welding gun (11) to a conventional hollow welding tip (16) by receiving the heating air inlet tube (66) of the tip (16) within the confines of a downstream socket (96) formed in the body (82) of the heat nozzle (12). A larger, upstream socket (86) formed in the body (82) of the heat nozzle (12) fits onto the heating barrel (34) of the handheld, portable welding gun (11). A plurality of preheating jets (98,102,106) are formed on the underside of the body (82) of the heat nozzle (12) to preheat the region of the channel immediately to the rear of the welding tip (16) just before molten sealant flows into that portion of the channel.

The nozzle (40) of the invention is formed from separate, mating sealant feeding (42) and hot air conducting members (44) that fit to and are secured together. The two part construction of the nozzle (40) produces first (46) and second (48) enclosed plenum chambers therebetween with a series of ducts and passages that preheat both the groove (20) in the flooring that is to receive molten sealant, and the sealant (108) itself. Furthermore, although the pattern of ducts, passages, and cavities within the finished nozzle (40) is quite intricate, the ducts, passageways, and ports are formed without great difficulty due to the two part construction of the nozzle (40). Moreover, the nozzle (40) is constructed so that the hot air does not mix with the sealant (108) within an internal melting chamber, but rather makes contact with the molten sealant only when the sealant (108) leaves the nozzle (40).

An apparatus is provided for sealing seams between adjacent sheets of flooring which define an upwardly facing, elongated groove where they meet. A conventional hand-held portable seam welding gun (22) has a body (24) defining a longitudinal axis (26). A heat concentration nose (34) is mounted on a heat conducting member. A heating tip mounting post (42) projects at an angle of at least about fifteen degrees, from the longitudinal axis of the seam welding gun. A hollow heating tip (44) employed on the mounting post (42) is provided with a forwardly directed, upturned toe (58) having a concave, downwardly facing groove therein forward of the front extremity of a sealant dispensing mouth. Also, a heating duct extends between the melting chamber of the heating tip and an orifice located behind the rear extremity of the sealant dispensing mouth. The welding gun employs a mobile, stabilizing guide (66) formed with a pair of laterally spaced outboard rollers (80,82) and a seam follower (84) located midway between the rollers and a track follower that rides in the groove between adjacent flooring sheets. An adapter (86) secures the guide to the welding gun body. A releasable fastener between the guide and the adapter holds the welding gun at a desired angle to the floor.
