A method of testing light-emitting condition of a vacuum florescent print head is disclosed. The print head (60) is of a type having a plurality of luminous elements (32,33,34) disposed along a main scanning direction for forming dots in the form of a linear column on a print paper (3), and the print head (60) is movable in a sub-scanning direction relative to the print paper. The method includes a first step of exposing and forming on a print paper a plurality of linear dot columns, each column consisting of a plurality of dots (D) arranged along a main scanning direction with a predetermined space therebetween, the plurality of dot columns being juxtaposed with each other with a predetermined space therebetween; a second step of determining density of each dot formed and exposed by the first step one column after another by using a scanner (80); and a third step of outputting the determined densities of the respective dots as light-emitting amounts of a plurality of luminous elements forming the linear dot column.

A fluorescent printer head is capable of dynamic driving to reduce the number of ICs required. A shield electrode (20) is provided between anode arrays (7;8) having anode dots (6) arranged in an offset manner. Control electrodes (30;31) are respectively arranged for the anode arrays. The construction of the fluorescent printer head ensures smooth selection of the anode arrays during the dynamic driving. Also, it eliminates nonuniformity of luminance of the anode arrays, realises a reduced size for the printer head and a reduction in manufacturing cost due to the reduction in the number of ICs required.

An optical printer head (1) capable of preventing catching between a filter holder (8) and a luminous tube (2) to prevent production of dust and attaining replacement of the luminous tube (2) without exposing filters to an ambient atmosphere. A filter holder (8) is arranged separately from the light source (2) and a selfoc lens array (14), to prevent production of dust from the filter holder (8) due to contact of the filter holder (8) with the light source (2) and the selfoc lens array (14). A base (9) is arranged so as to receive only the filter holder (8) from being exposed to an ambient atmosphere, resulting in dust being kept from adhering to the filters. A pair of light passages (12,13) are formed on a light path and closed with a light-permeable cover (15) to sealedly close the base (9), thereby preventing dust from intruding into the base (9) during replacement of the light source (2).
