The devices (6) can be pivoted about pivots (8) in order to adopt a second configuration in which they point inwards so that some further rollers (62) spaced close together now face upwards for supporting the central rails on the underside of a flatrack (F) during loading. In the second configuration, the structure used to support the container (9) during loading is stowed inwardly and below the rollers (62) and thus does not impede the loading of the flatrack (F).

The novel invention proposes a combination of variable containers and a chassis or variable platform (10) and various items of superstructure for transporting light, bulky bulk products. The variable platform has a short-travel raising and lowering device (11) and is firmly secured to the chassis. A container, for example, can be moved from the stationary to the transportable state very rapidly. The superstructure or the container may be either supported on the floor by four supports or lowered on the chassis via suitable bearing points. In the majority of cases the exchange is made with the variable platform and can be performed by a single person without further aids like a crane or fork-lift truck. The superstructure may be in the form of an open or closed container. Light, bulky products, e.g. insulating material, may be transported according to the invention in the same manner e.g. building rubble using prior art interchangeable skips.

A pilot member (70) which is freely movably supported on a carrier (68) connected to the load carrying portion (16) is elevationally movable with the load carrying portion (16) between first and second preselected elevationally spaced apart positions (28,30) relative to the frame (14). A first engaging device (72) moves the pilot member (70) in directions transverse to the axis (26) in response to movement of the pilot member (70) toward the first elevational position (28) and maintains the pilot member (70) at a first preselected transverse location relative to the axis (26) and the load supporting device (44) at a preselected transverse location at the first elevational position of the load carying portion (16). The load positioning assembly (59) is particularly suited for use on an SGV (10).
