The operative units (10) fold the half-blanks (4) so as to envelop the flanks of the pack (2), as well as a peripheral zone of a topmost and bottom-most face of the pack (2). A method is disclosed in which stacks (34) of tiles (2) are wrapped in five steps immediately following sorting and stacking, without any pause in operation. In the first step, a horizontally disposed sheet of cardboard (F) is urged downward by the bottom of the newly formed stack (34); in the second, the cardboard sheet comes into contact with the surface (M) of the packaging stage such that descent terminates with the stack already enveloped at bottom, front and rear; in the third, the rear top and side flaps are folded down and the stack is shunted forward; in the fourth, the front top and side flaps are folded, and in the fifth, folding of the top and bottom side flaps completes the package. Forward movement of the stack continues uninterrupted through the last two steps. The machine implementing such a method has a multitie- red sorting stage (P1, P2...P9) and final compaction stage.
