Described herein is a physiologically-balanced, acidic solution. Typically the solution is prepared by a chemical reactions or by the electrolysis of a solution s comprising a mixture of an inorganic salt to form a physiologically balanced solution. This invention also relates to methods for use of the solutions, including a specialized bandage which may be used in combination with the solutions, or optionally with other topically applied materials. A mixture of inorganic salts and, optionally minerals, is used in order to mimic the electrolyte concentration and mixture of body fluid in an isotonic state. The solution typically comprises of one halide salt of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, and other cations. Typically the halide is fluoride, chloride, bromide, or iodide, and most typically chloride. A typical electrolyzed solution of the present invention has a pH within the range of about 2 to about 5, an oxidation reduction potential within the range of about +600 mV to about +1200 mV, and hypohalous acid concentration in the range of about 10 ppm to about 200 ppm. The solution has bactericidal, fungicidal, and sporicidal properties. The composition of the invention is nontoxic and has antibacterial properties, and is useful in any application in which antimicrobial properties are desirable.

A process for producing hypochlorous acid by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in droplet form with gaseous chlorine to produce hypochlorous acid vapor and solid alkali metal chloride particles in which the improvement comprises employing molar ratios of gaseous chlorine to the alkali metal hydroxide of at least about 22:1. The process achieves high yields of hypochlorous acid by minimizing side reactions including the formation of chlorate as an impurity in the alkali metal chloride particles produced. The hypochlorous acid solution produced contains from about 35 to about 60 percent by weight of HOCl, a dissolved chlorine concentration of less than about 2 percent by weight, and is substantially free of alkali metal ions and chloride ions.

Procédé de production d'acide hypochloreux consistant à faire réagir un hydroxyde de métal alcalin sous forme de gouttelettes avec du chlore gazeux pour obtenir de l'acide hypochloreux en phase vapeur ainsi que des particules solides de chlorure de métal alcalin, procédé dans lequel l'amélioration consiste à employer des rapports molaires de chlorure gazeux par rapport à l'hydroxyde de métal alcalin d'au moins 22/1. Ce procédé permet d'obtenir des rendements élevés en acide hypochloreux en minimisant les réactions secondaires comprenant la formation de chlorate à titre d'impureté dans les particules de chlorure de métal alcalin produites. La solution d'acide hypochloreux obtenue contient de 35 à 60% en poids, environ, de HOCl, une concentration pondérale en chlore dissous inférieure à environ 2%, et ne contient pratiquement pas d'ions métalliques ni d'ions chlore.
