The present invention provides a process for removing ammonia as an aqueous salt solution from an acid gas comprising ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. A strong acid, such as sulfuric acid, is used as a scrubbing agent to convert ammonia to an ammonium salt. Control of pH and stripping in combination with reboiler or evaporators reduces hydrogen sulfide concentration. The ammonium salt is produced as an aqueous solution, which may crystallized to form a solid product. The ammonium salt solution or solid may be used as a fertilizer.

Sulphur vapour is formed by partial oxidation of hydrogen sulphide. A burner is operated so as to establish a flame in a furnace in or into which the burner fires. There is supplied to the flame from the first region of the mouth of the burner at least one flow of a first combustible gas comprising hydrogen sulphide. At least one second flow of a first oxidising gas is caused to issue from the mouth of the burner and mix in the flame with the first combustible gas. There is supplied to the flame from a second region of the mouth of the burner surrounding and spaced from the said first region at least one third flow of a second combustible gas comprising hydrogen sulphide. At least one fourth flow of a second oxidising gas is caused to issue from a region or regions of the mouth of the burner surrounded by said second region and mix in the flame with the second combustible gas. At least one fifth, outermost flow of a third oxidising gas is caused to mix in the flame with the second combustible gas. A resultant gas mixture including sulphur vapour, water vapour, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen and residual hydrogen sulphide is withdrawn from the furnace.

A process is disclosed for desulphurating an at least H2S-containing crude gas stream (1) in a Claus plant (A), by post-combustion (B) of the Claus waste gas and by scrubbing (C) the waste gas from the post-combustion for SO2 removal, the SO2 (5) recovered by scrubbing being returned to the Claus plant. In the Claus plant, from 60 to 90 %, preferably from 67 to 85 %, in particular 67 to 80 %, of the sulphur contained in the crude gas are directly removed from the crude gas and from 33 to 10 %, preferably from 25 to 10 %, in particular from 20 to 15 %, of the sulphur originally contained in the crude gas are returned as SO2. Gas scrubbing for SO2 removal is advantageously carried out by means of a physical absorption agent. A crude gas partial stream may be directly led to the post-combustion, bypassing the Claus plant. Besides a Claus furnace operated at a temperature between 850 and 1300 DEG C, preferably between 900 and 1100 DEG C, the Claus plant may have one or several catalytic and/or thermal reactors for sulphur generation and sulphur recovery condensers, or it may use only thermal sulphur generation stages or it may consist of a direct oxidation Claus plant.

Die Erfindung zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass das hydrierte Abgas (12) unabhängig von dem zu behandelnden Syntheserohgas (2) gewaschen wird, wobei aus dem Waschmittelkreislauf der Sauergaswäsche (S) entnommenes Waschmittel (13) dazu eingesetzt wird, um Schwefelkomponenten auszuwaschen.

The present invention relates to a supported catalyst system for the removal of sulfur compounds, such as H2S comprising a metal compound on a support material, wherein in said support material, the sum of the pore volume present in micro-pores and in mesopores is less than 0.20 ml per gram of catalyst, and wherein the pore volume V-Hg, as measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry, is at least 0.30 ml/g. The invention further relates to processes for desulfurization of gases containing sulfur compounds, such as H2S in which this catalyst system is used.
