The amination reaction product may also comprise a first sterically hindered amine and a second sterically hindered amine. The absorbent composition, preferably, includes an organic co-solvent, such as a sulfone compound. A method is also provided for improving the operation of certain gas absorption processes by utilizing the absorbent composition.

A process for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from a gas stream in which the gas stream is first passed through a Claus unit operating at a sub-stoichiometric ratio (H 2 S: SO 2 ) of greater than 2:1 to produce a tail gas stream comprising less than 2000 vppm SO 2 . This tail gas stream is then treated to increase the sulfur recovery to at least 99.5% by first directly cooling the tail gas stream by contact with water as a coolant, followed by contacting the gas stream with a circulating stream of a dilute, absorbent solution of a severely sterically hindered secondary aminoether alcohol to further cool the gas stream, and then removing the H 2 S from the stream using a stronger absorbent solution of a severely sterically hindered secondary aminoether alcohol.

A process is provided for producing elemental sulfur from hydrogen sulfide contained in an acid gas feed stream wherein hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide are reacted in a catalytic only sulfur recovery unit comprising a single catalytic converter containing a Claus catalytic reaction zone. A sulfur dioxide-enriched gas recovered from tail gas treatment is recycled and introduced into the catalytic reaction zone as part of a feed gas mixture that also includes the acid gas feed stream. Temperatures within the catalytic reaction zone are effectively moderated by recycle of tail gas effluent to the converter so that high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide in the acid gas feed stream can be tolerated and improved process flexibility and capacity are realized. A pretreatment process including contacting the acid gas with an aqueous acid wash to reduce the concentration of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the acid gas and inhibit deactivation of the oxidation catalyst is also disclosed.

After cooling (17), the hydrolyzed gas is introduced in one (2a) of two CLAUS catalytic zones (2a, 2b) mounted parallel, the other catalytic zone (2b) being for regenerating, then cooling. The regeneration is carried out, in open circuit, with a gas stream (19, 36) drawn from the gas (15) before it is cooled (17), the regeneration gas effluent (24b) being re-injected (29, 20) into the gas (15), between drawing (19) and cooling (17). A method and a device for processing a gas containing hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide, wherein the gas is contacted with an organic solvent (1) containing a catalyst in at least one gas/liquid reactor/contactor (2) at a suitable temperature, and the gas (20) substantially free of hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide is recovered. Specifically, a single-phase solvent and sulphur solution (4) is drawn off from the reactor/contactor, a portion thereof is cooled in at least one cooling area (8) to form a suspension of sulphur crystals in the solvent, the crystallised sulphur is separated from the solvent in a separation area (10), and both a sulphur-depleted solvent (14, 15) that is at least partially recycled (1) in the reactor/contactor (2), and sulphur (13), are recovered. The method and device are useful for purifying effluents from Claus units.
