For economically storing relatively large quantities of hydrogen, a hydrogen storage material comprises (1) a major R 2 Fe 17 phase wherein the R is lanthanum, cerium and, optionally, other rare earth(s) such as praesodymium and neodymium, (2) an R'/R'Fe 2 eutectic where R' is lanthanum-starved R, (3) an unalloyed lanthanum phase, and (4) an unalloyed iron phase. The material contains less than 55% by weight cerium based on the total weight of cerium, lanthanum and other rare earth(s). Such a material is produced by an homogenising heat treatment.

A method of restraining a diffusion of tritium and an apparatus for same are disclosed. The method includes the step of disposing a hydrogen-absorbing metal (16) in a tritium passage in a direction of diffusion of tritium so that the hydrogen-absorbing metal absorbs tritium to be diffused. The apparatus includes a hydrogen-absorbing metal (16) surrounding a device of a fast breeder reactor. The tritium to be diffused can be readily captured. An arrangement of capturing the tritium permeating the device is simplified in the present invention.

A process for separating hydrogen gas from a stream of a mixture of gases containing the hydrogen gas includes contacting a suspension of hydride-forming material particles in a fluid medium with the stream to permit the particles to form a hydride. The hydrided particles can then be thermally decomposed to liberate hydrogen and to regenerate the hydride-forming capabilities of the particles. By preference, the fluidized bed is a slurry mixture of the hydride-forming material particles in an auxiliary liquid such as, for example, a heat resistant oil. The amount of hydride-forming particles in the slurry mixture is preferably between about 10% to about 70% by weight.

An apparatus for storing gases such as hydrogen gas at cryogenic temperatures. The hydrogen gas is stored in a storage vessel 1 at cryogenic temperatures and those cryogenic temperatures are sustained by a heat exchanger (comprising a reservoir 10, a fluid connection means 12, a coil supply tube 14 and coils 16) which provides nearly uniform distribution of a volatile liquid throughout the hydrogen gas being stored. The storage vessel contains an adsorbent of the physiosorption kind. The self regulating flow of oxygen through the heat exchanger maintains the adsorbent at a suitable cryogenic storage temperature even when the apparatus is not being used to supply hydrogen.
