The present invention concerns a bushing assembly comprising terminal ears (1) coupled to opposed end walls (2) of the bushing assembly, for heating the bushing tip plate and walls, each of said terminal ears comprising: (a) an electrically conductive plate, said conductive plate comprising at least a first portion (1A) extending along a longitudinal axis (X1) from a first terminal edge (1D) substantially normal to said longitudinal axis (X1) and coupled to a bushing end wall (2), and further comprising a second, free terminal edge (1C) connectable to a source of power, and (b) at least one elongated reinforcing member (1B) coupled to said at least first portion (1A) of said plate to increase the bending moment of the latter, characterized in that, said at least one elongated reinforcing member (1B) extends from, or adjacent to the plate first terminal edge (1D) along a direction non parallel to said longitudinal axis (X1).

A bushing (10) including a terminal ear (100, 102) and a method of manufacturing the bushing are disclosed. The bushing includes a bushing body (11) which can include side plates (12, 14), end plates (16, 18), a bottom plate (20), and terminal ears coupled to the bushing body. Clamps (200) are attached to the terminal ears to supply electrical current to the bushing to maintain the glass inside in a liquid state. Each terminal ear includes an upper portion (110) and a lower portion (120). The upper portion is coupled to a side plate of the bushing. A clamp is attached to the lower portion of the terminal ear. The upper and lower portions are oriented at an angle with respect to each other. Support portions (130, 132, 134, 136) are provided along the side edges of the upper portions of the terminal ears. Support portions stiffen the terminal ear, thereby increasing its resistance to bending and fatigue stresses. Support portions do not contact the bushing and therefore do not directly conduct current to the bushing. Accordingly, the temperature of the support portions during operation of the bushing will be lower than the conducting portion of the terminal ears. Since the support portions operate at a lower temperature, the thermal degradation of the terminal ear is reduced.

A supplemental controller (132, 144) for a fiber glass bushing (102) actively performs heating and cooling of a connected segment (104, 106, 108) of the bushing (102) which is otherwise controlled by a primary controller (122). In one embodiment, the supplemental controller (132, 144) performs heating by means of current injection into a connected bushing segment (104, 106, 108) and cooling by means of current diversion from or around the connected bushing segment (104, 106, 108). Initial start-up and balancing operations can be performed without activation of the supplemental controller (132, 144). In another embodiment of the invention, the supplemental controller (132, 144) heats a bushing segment (104, 106, 108) by injecting current in-phase with current from the primary bushing controller (122) and cools the bushing segment (104, 106, 108) by injecting current out-of-phase with current from the primary bushing controller (122).

A bushing controller circuit for regulating the current flow through a fiber glass bushing to thereby control the temperature of the molten glass being drawn into fibers is disclosed. The bushing temperature is measured by a plurality of thermocouples which produce an average temperature reading that is used to control the power fed to the bushing. The bushing controller circuit is a three-terminal device connected across two sections of the bushing to regulate relative current flow in the two sections, in order to control the amount of fiber produced by each section. The bushing controller circuit includes a pair of timing circuits which operate in response to the polarity and magnitude of a control signal, produced at a remote control panel, to control the conductivity of a corresponding pair of current control devices connected across respective sections of the bushing. A reset circuit produces a signal corresponding to the zero crossing of the input AC power to synchronize the timing circuits.
